Sporty - Sorry 'bout the brain fart. I never really thought about what the outcome (violations written) was. I guess I just "ass-u-ME"d that there was a ticket written in regard to the taking of the "deer"...whether it be not having tag on you, etc..
A Lake Ozark officer got caught shooting at a robo-deer coming back from the bar many years ago. Just so happened he was on State Park property when he did it. I don't remember what all they wrote him up for, but if I remember correctly about the only thing he got to keep was his ass and his truck. Everything else was history....the gun he shot, plus one in the truck (I think), quite a few dollars out of his pocket and his job. Seems like he may have even got a DWI out of the deal.

One of the farms I hunt is in a bottom along a first class poacher's road. This property has the perfect setup for a sting operation. To make matters even better for the MDC the owner is a MDC employee. When they scheduled an operation for this location, the owner was called up on active duty from the Reserves. He backed out of the deal because he knew he wasn't going to be there. Should one of the idiots that got caught choose retribution, he wouldn't be there to blow their sh!t away. He couldn't leave his wife and kids knowing some pissed off poacher wanted to burn his house down or do God know what else...

Anyway, I was there when the agents went through the whole explanation of the operation. They pretty much nail the losers on anything they can. As I recall, shooting at a deer was not one of them, because it isn't a deer...

If there is an agent or ex-agent around that can clarify, that would be great...

What about their INTENT to kill the deer?

I'm thinking that if a road hunter has a tag and is in season, if they were to kill a deer, they would really only be guilty of trepassing (to retrieve the deer) and shooting from a roadway. If it's after dark, that's another violation. BTW, if it's after legal shooting hours, is it technically not season? Seems to me that season is pretty clearly defined as being the daylight hours.

We need an agent to respond here... Or, somebody with more time than me can call the MDC.

Speaking of poachers...Springfield News-Leader has a story about 2 Missourians busted in Wyoming. I couldn't find an on-line version, so here are the details: Gary Klemp 51 (Doe Run, MO) and Stephen Henrich 48 (Farmington, MO) pled guilty to shooting two big horn sheep, in Platte Valley Wilderness, without a license and allowing they sheep to go to waste. They were sentenced to 180 days in jail (124 of those suspended) and $14,174.00 in restitution.

Yes, 124 of 180 days suspended. I'm guessing they spent 56 days in the clink and they were essentially sentenced to time served.

I wonder how much of that $14,000 Wyoming will ever see? That's a damn steep fine, for sheep meat. Had a buddy get busted in an MDC checkpoint, with a turkey breast, coming back from pheasant hunting. That little ole turkey breast cost him $200!! Could've bought a lot of turkeys at the store for $200! Sorry, but I ain't rich enough to risk $200 for a damn turkey breast!! He's probably damn lucky they didn't catch him on the property, find the turkey and charge him with wasting meat too!

I'm sorry but I"m a ferm believer in if you do the crime you pay the fine and do the time...

If you make the fine steep they will think twice,, you make it even more steep then that then they wont do it mostlikely..

DoniphanRedneck

Then boys should do all the time and pay the complete fine..

Like I said before.. If you get cout doing the crime you pay the fine and do the time..

My question is, how many would be in favor of the GW using the remote-controlled deer for catching poachers??

I'd let them set one up on my property, in a New York second. Every year, we have road-hunters, trespassers & poacher problems.

Last year during firearm deer season, someone shot towards my home, from the road. My wife was in the yard, and was petrified ~ she didn't know what to do. I told her next time, drop to the ground! That orange vest is not bullet proof...
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it...
