Re: The chances of killing a B&C buck...
It's more to do with QDM ( i:e; place to hunt ) in my opinion. My point is that in Missouri, at least north of 70. The genetics, food, are here. If you are hunting private ground in Missouri and practice good QDM, your chances are just as good as anywhere else.
So PS, you are going somewhere where the land is managed for you, right ?

2B, big buck killers are the product of a good place to hunt. It is that simple. I'm not taking away from 170's accomplishments, but I would bet that even he would admit such. You don't see Keith@aimlow talking the talk about MO. Robin was sick when he didn't get an IL tag. The biggest buck that has come off of the square mile of which I hunt in the last 16 years is 164". There have been a few 140s that I am aware of.
Thats because 170 is QDM'ing the area Robin wants to hunt in Illinois. Can't blame him for being ill. I bet that if Robin and Keith had access to places just as close in missouri that were as well taken care of , they wouldn't bother.

2B: I agree. I think we have the genetics as well. We have the cover, we have the food. Now, we just need to have a rifle season in December. That, and guys like me who own only small parcels of land need to quit shooting sammich 120" deer. Like I and others have said, it is the rifle season that is our biggest problem. I talked to a very prominent fellow at MDC a few years back about it. He stated that he would love to move to a season like KS, but, he said the general public in this state would never stand for it.
As far as the Iowa deal goes, I don't know what they do on this farm/farms. I don't even know where it is other than the fact that I got invited to go and I am excited as heck. The guy told me he saw numerous 130/140" deer last year but was holding out for a 160" buck. Of the 5 bucks that were shot my this particular group of guys from Canada, I would say they went anywhere from 130-170". One was an absolute monster. PS
Robin and Keith do have a good farm up neark Kirksville that they can hunt on. I'll bet you any amount of $ they would rather be in IL. Ifn' I could get away with hunting over there every weekend, I would do it too. A buddy of mine drew an Iowa archery tag and planned to hunt every weekend in Iowa the entire fall. He killed a 128" 8 pointer 10 minutes into the first day in Iowa and had to settle for a 143" MO 10 pointer 6 weeks later. But, he was going to say screw MO. He is the one that killed the 164" deer that I mentioned earlier.
Also, I heard more shots the last evening of rifle season than I did on the very first day. I guess they were on a mad doe rampage. But, it was odd. I like peace and quiet in the woods.
Oh, and 2B, don't you get it that these states have a natural kindof QDM the way their gun seasons are structured? I bet you don't see many IL or KS license plates in MO during bow season. I have heard that Iowa hunters do a lot of road hunting with rifles along the border up north in hopes of killing a MO deer, however.

Kirksville is a long ways from Robin and Keith and probably not managed like the place in Ill + Ill is a whole lot closer. BTW, I bought a mongoose the other day.

I think it is 2 hours versus 1.5 hours. Either way, convenience is a bonus.
2B, is it that you aren't big enough to handle the PS on your own? You have to get a mongoose to do your dirty work for you?

You can't discount time in the stand. I gun hunt in Kirksville and could bow hunt it too, but with the 3hr drive from here, I just bowhunt locally. Having a place to bowhunt within 4miles of my front door is worth having access to 5 places 3+hrs away.
I have a buddy that kills P&Y (biggest 164")bucks every year down by Clinton on public land. He is a great hunter, but also spends tons of hrs on stand every season bow, gun, and muzzle stuffer.
Ofcourse you can't kill what's not there, so there has to be some trophy potential, or you may as well just be hunting Jefferson Co. Right Kieth?

Re: The chances of killing a B&C buck...
There is nothing like convenience I will say that. I'd be going through a divorce if I had to travel more than 30 minutes to hunt. My wife wouldn't understand that. She can understand the deal in Iowa as she is the one who set me up on that deal. Heck, I invited Keith to come to a place over here. That is about 1.5 hours for him. But, if I was his silly donkey, I'd be on his friend Tommy's place. I tell you that place is primed for big deer. It makes me almost wish the HFA was that thick.
2B, have I told you today that you don't know your donkey from a hole in the ground?

Aint that the truth! More hours on stand beats sitting at home and wishing about it every time in my book.

Re: The chances of killing a B&C buc
I found out last night my neighbor killed two and recovered a roadkill on his property that make B&C. I was shocked, but I believe him. I saw the monster road kill last year, but didn't know what it scored. I didn't even know that he bow hunted. I stopped him while he was getting his mail, and said, "I'd like to hunt those deer you have" (15 in his pasture at that time), he laughed and we started talking deer next to the side of the road for 20-30 minutes.
I knew there were big deer in the city, I just didn't know how big, and how close to me!

Correct me if I am wrong but both PS, 170 both have taken a 150+ with a bow, no less. Snowflake has with a gun. I think fish has a 150+ on the wall. Not sure who else. I don't.
