I don't know OF. He has experience with this stuff and some of that stuff is supposed to be planted in late August early September. heck if I know. If I were on it, I would have done this 3 months ago. But, at that time, I was scouting trees out to hang my deer feeder in.

Read his posts, even he admits that clover won't sprout till spring and the other poopoo will be dead after first frost. If nothing is growing it's a dirt plot, not a food plot. Image Image But by all means, he has "experience", after all we don't have any 'sperience with food plots are any of that high falootin' huntin' strategies.... Image Image Image

I have had buddies tell me that the clover will come up in the fall if you get rain. Now, that is a big if. But, I'm gonna go for it.

It will come up under the wheat and be there after the wheat is cut.

Clover will come up in the fall with some rain. But for the most part what does sprout won't have enough of a root system established to survive the winter. Generally the spring growth is from the seed that didn't sprout, not from what did sprout.

OF, you can certainly do as you have described here and will get good results.

The Cow peas, buck oats, will get get growth before it dies out usually toward mid november. Deer like the young sprouts and hit it hard in the fall. The clover does not die out over the winter and does get ok growth prior to the first hard freeze. Overseeding again in feb insures you will get a good stand that will pretty much drown out the weeds.

The milo provides your late season food.

As far as the clover, I recommend Alsike, and Jumbo Ladino.

This year I put in Cow peas, milo, sunflower, and soybeans. Already have an excellent stand of clover using the previously mention method in 04. Will come back in august and get the forage oats in. Winter wheat does not draw the deer in near as well as the cowpea, clover, oat, soybean, milo mixture.

In fact I think it is a waste of time to put wheat in. There is plenty of it around. The idea is to put something a bit different that brings the deer to your property over the neighbors. Especially in regards to getting them in close for bowhunting.

I disagree with you on that blanket statement. It depends on where you are at and what is around the property. The majority of our neighbors plant corn with a few doing beans. There's also a lot of hayfields due to the number of cattle farmers in the area. There's only one farm I've seen with winter wheat in about a 12-15 mile radius. Everyone has to do what works for their particular area. What we have done has worked wonders for our property and the deer we've seen on it.

I don't think you have been there, have you? Bottom land on the HFA? If so, I must have been drinking Coors Light the day I took you there. I plan to put it up on the Sanctuary up and next to the main road. I am really doing this so that the place looks better. Since I have a gazillion deer out there, I can kill 2 birds with one stone.

Have I been there?!! Does this look familiar??...

Clover will certainly sprount when planted in september for the fall hunt. Been there and done that. Especially if you have a place that is well shaded for the morning hous, thus allowing the ground to stay moist from the dew.

Getting lucky with some rain is always nice, but you should be OK Jeff, and such.
