Well, in a sense you are talking about the Mexicalis.

This is why I have never bought this deer jumping the string crap. If a deer does not sense your presence, he is gonna get whacked from 0 to 40 yards and never know what has hit him. Ifn' he realizes something is up, sure the flight syndrome is gonna cause him to react at the sound of the bow being released. These folks show this stuff on film and try to sell it as if it is natural. Bullchit I say. Oh, and my study section is rather appreciable. So you can consider these statements facts and not theories. Image

PS,
I agree with you on almost everything, but not on the string jumping theory. I saw it 1st hand this past season and have the proof on video. I shot at deer that was nibbling on a branch over a scrape when the bow was fired and was not in the least alert. However he was able to drop down and touch the ground with his belly before the arrow got there. It is very obvious watching the scene in slo-mo that the arrow was going to hit pay dirt had the buck not dropped. The shot was approx. 30 yds.

PS,

I agree with you on very things, and this is just another of those things. Image There is an interesting article on "String Jumping" in the most recent Petersen`s Bowhunting magazine. Here`s a paragraph, from that, for you to ponder awhile:

"Sound travels at approximately 1,085 feet per second. It takes .056 seconds for the sound of the limbs bottoming to reach a deer that`s 20 yards from the base of your tree. If you shoot an arrow that travels 230 fps, it will take .275 seconds for the arrow to arrive. That gives the deer roughly .22 seconds to start dropping."

I personally can`t recall any deer that I ever shot at, with a bow, that didn`t react to the noise of the bow, at the shot. I`ve seen deer on video that stood in the same position until the arrow reached them, but I haven`t experienced that yet. That`s why I always try to aim at the heart of a deer. If it drops a little I get a double lung hit. If it stays put, it`s shot through the heart. So far this method has paid off for me.

I can recall only a single deer that I have shot at that has reacted to the sound of the bow being fired. I generally aim dead center behind the shoulder and that is generally where I hit the animal. I never aim for a heart shot ever. I like to give myself a bigger target. I try to get a double lunger and not one single time have I ever hit a deer high. Far back a few times, but those were walking deer. So, I do realize one can miss when a deer is moving. I will continue to aim for the center of the chest each and every time. I don't buy the deer jumping the string stuff unless that deer has a reason to be cautious. Sure, it may happen every now and then, but anymore folks tell me this nonsense and the first thing that comes to mind is just another excuse for missing the animal. The deer of which I have mentioned above was a big buck at 46 yards and he did jump the string on me. He was in an open field, looking straight at me quartering away. I cannot recall if he saw me draw or what it was, but at the release of the arrow, he bolted, and I ended up hitting him in the back ham. I hit his femur and got less than a couple of inches of penetration. But, that deer already was aware of my presence and was bolting possibly before the arrow was even released. I have killed many deer with a bow, and most never knew what hit them. Coyotes, fox, and bobcat; same story, and they seem to be a little more wary than deer.

Now, I don't buy the animals being stupid comments either. In fact, I feel deer, turkey, and everything else to be pretty dang smart.

BTW, if deer jumping the string were a regular occurance, very few would be killed year in, year out and most individuals that go for a double lung shot would be whacking the spine or missing altogether on a regular basis. Jumping the string is a very rare occurance plain and simple.

Keith@aimlow, anymore when you tell me you miss, you could come up with a total eclipse taking place and I would buy it. Either that, or an alien spaceship dropping to earth and picking up the deer and carrying it to another galaxy right before you get a shot.

I will show you the video..you can make out of it what you want. Best Robin and I can make out of it is the deer dropped out of the way in time. Can't really make anything else of it.

Tony...do you answer emails or PM's anymore?

If you think it is a common occurance, then so be it. I don't because I have never experienced it other than what I have described above, and that deer was looking right at me. I'm sure that it very well indeed might happen to me this year. But, 1 out of 100 times doesn't make me a believer that it is common. Like I have stated, I would not be a bit surprised if the Second Coming of Christ didn't occur during your next chance to kill a good deer.

I never said I thought it was a common occurance. I also read a the same or a similar article that Tony is referring to and it makes more sense that they shouldn't be able to do it. However, I am just saying I have witnessed it it and others have also. How often it happens??? No clue there. I'm sure you have seen this on film before also. I know I have seen it several times on shows and videos. I don't think it's the norm but I can't deny I have seen it occur.

Yes, I have seen it on the few videos I have seen. But, that is my point exactly. I'm tired of seeing it because on those very videos it is often used as an excuse for a miss on a very alert deer. Then, they go into this spill about it (showing the replay) to the point that it is sickening. They make it out to be something that happens quite often when in my own opinion and experiences, it is something that rarely happens. I think more often than not the deer knows something is up already. What do they call that? The 6th Sense. Image

Maybe, but I know one thing, the deer I am referring too wasn't on alert unles he is one cool customer. He had his head raised chewing on a limb.

Actually what I believe is the deer are just dropping to get into springing position to start their "get the heck out of Dodge" practice. I don't believe they are literally ducking under the arrow intentionally.

That is it Keith. They have to "load up" their muscles to jump/run, and that involves dropping their body some. It is their flight response whether you shoot an arrow at them or not.

I have had one doe that I thought may have tried jumping the string, but she was looking right at me at 11yds when I shot. The hit was good, 40yd recovery.

I've shot two other deer inside 15yds that were looking right at me in the stand that didn't react at the shot at all. I don't shoot deer looking at me any father than that though, I'm afraid they would make too much of a movement to ensure a good hit.
