Stockton or Truman?

Post by maladroit1 » July 1st, 2005, 1:50 pm

I have a question for you guys. My Wife and I are going to take a trip to Stockton or Truman in Mid to late September or early October. I have always wanted to catch a walleye (Im a native Californian with a mostly Bass and Crappie Background) and was wondering where you thought my best bet would be. Im not a beginner fisherman by any means but I am with Walleye. What do you guys think? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Stockton for sure, if you are targeting walleyes.

No contest...Stockton. Safer water, too. Truman has billions of tree stumps. Stockton does, too, but mostly in the backs of creeks, and they are well marked on the Fishing Hot Spots lake map. Stockton is a highlands lake, and the shoreline of the steeper banks will be familiar to you. If you come down in mid-September, come join us at the final walleye tournament of the year....

That's tempting CW. I might be able to pull that one off. I could be the first person in the tournament that never caught a walleye before!

Au contraire! Your name would go at the bottom of a long, but distinguished list of people in that category.....I had two to my credit when I fished my first tournament last summer. The number has not increased significantly......

Forgot something...(and this is not post padding to reach the 2K mark...well, not completely anyway)...thre are several highly experienced walleye fishermen in your general area who are members of the state association. Maybe you could hook up with one of them and nail a couple of big ones from the Big Muddy.....

Welcome, O maladroit1! I'm not familiar with Truman--just fished there once, when the water was chocolate milk. I believe that Stockton would have the better population, and in early October, you should still be able to catch them on the edges of the flats and humps. We can help you out with spots and techniques as the time draws closer.

Maybe Tigerhaze will chime in with some input on Truman.

Since none of the "regulars" on this forum fish Truman, chances are slim that it will get any votes. As walleyesrus mentioned, there is one big flat that everybody hits, unlike Stockton where there are two flats that everybody hits. Smaller lake, twice as many flats...what more could you ask for????? And Stockton has a lot of sailboats with girls who sometimes have "wardrobe malfunctions" out on the water........

Well that settles it then. If im not catching any fish at least I will have the "Wardrobe Malfunctions" to keep me occupied. Stockton it is. Thanks for all the info guys. And I have been interested in going out on the Mississippi to hit the Walleye and Sauger bite in the fall. I tried it once a couple of years ago and only ended up with a few white bass and a cold.

M-1...besides the constant flow of mis-information that flows freely around here, you can get current updates on Stockton fishing...bass, walleyes, crappie, etc. by clicking on: www.mwbt.com/stocktonfishreports.html
Those are posted by the local guides, and are generally pretty reliable indicators of what is going on with the bite. The most valuable information in there right now is the thermocline depth. That bears close watching this time of year for many of us.
