CW: I hope like heck you aren't calling me an "Ozarker". I come to this area by way of the bootheel. Most of the guys you know walk with a jakeleg due to either moonshining or walking on the side of a hill. We flatlanders have our stuff together. Funny story here; I went to school in the Ozarks and I met this gal from NW AR while there. She and I got into a heated conversation when I told her that nearly half of AR was as flat as a pancake. I continued to ask her if she had been east of LR, but she wouldn't answer. If she had been a hot chick, I might have given in. But, I wasn't budging and neither was she. She had never been out of the hills of AR. I met another in English 101 or something like that that told a story of how she had to walk a few hundred yards to the outhouse in a blizzard and all. No running water, nothing. I was raised a country boy, but I could not believe what I was hearing. PS

My inlaws lived liked that only 22 yrs ago PS. I have relatives that never had gas or electric powered anything until the mid sixties, they still plowed with a mule team, and cut fence posts by hand.

I did too Dave, but this was 1987. My Grandpa had an outhouse, but he also had a regular toilet too. My dad grew up this way for certain.

I was born and schooled in the NW part of the state, and it was always Mizzoo-rah. I have to assume that was correct, because my Grandparents and most of my Great Grandparents, who were born here, pronounced it that way.

Since we're on the subject, my grandfather and grandmother lived in a real sod house on the prairie near Bridgeport Nebraska.
When he was young, my grandfather drove a covered wagon for two professional hunters that hunted prairie chickens and shipped them in ice cars on the railroad to Lincoln and Omaha restaraunts.

Sorry for opening this can of worms, I never intended for the post padding hunting dorks to get imvolved. I will think thru my posts better in the future. I do find it amazing it only took about 10 posts for an outhouse to be mentioned. Image Image Image

You southern boys really do need to learn how to speak correctly!!! Being a "import", I will never figure out how Missouri is pronounced Mizzura. After living down here in all this crappy heat, Misery is a better pronounciation.

Enjoying being back in the great white north this week, and am looking forward to another week of life in paradise. Walleye and lake trout fishing have been great, don't want to leave.

When my wife and I got married in the late 60's, we spent our honeymoon in the original house that was on this farm when her folks bought it. They had electricity run from the REA line out front to the house and put a pump in the well, along with plumbing for the bathroom, and a water heater. The old outhouse stayed up for years. The original well house is still here, along with the original hand dug well. Of course, now we get our water from several hundred feet down, but back then it only took a couple of hours pumping to run the old well dry. When we lived in the old original house, it was heated by a Franklin stove in the living room and a kerosene heater in the kitchen....with no insulation of any kind. We even had a "pet" black snake that would come inside the house and crawl up on the bed to absorb heat. It was harmless, of course, but you never get used to waking up and seeing a six foot snake at the foot of the bed. Image
Hey...walleyesrus...it's not post padding when our visitors from the top half come down and reminisce with us. Deer season is a long way off, and you can only discuss so much about a food plot or tree stands this time of year. I'm OK with it.

I moved to CA with my folks when I was in grade school, and lived there until I moved back to Ozark 15 years ago. As a kid in CA I got picked on because of my accent. Kids always asked if I was from Texas.

But the Ozark talk isn't a southern accent, it's distinctive. On the rare occasions when we met other people from SW Missouri in California, they just sounded like HOME.

For us, it was always Miss-our-i. If someone said Miss-our-ah, we knew they were from another part of the state. (possibly Yankees)

Have you ever noticed how Missouri (and southern Illinois)have place-names from other places in the world, but they insist on pronouncing them differenlty? I get a kick out of it.

Spo-kane instead of Spokane, Lebannun instead of Lebanon, Nev-A-da instead of Nev-ah-da, Ka-ro instead of Cairo. I'm surprised they haven't figured out a different way to say Mexico.

I've been reviewing the topics on the hunting lodge quite a bit and can't say I;ve seen anything about food plots or tree stands, but you are correct anyone is welcome.

Walleyerus....it's almost time to plant food plots, and those posts, along with discussions and comparisons of various tree stands would be found in the Deer Hunting forum more than in the Hunting Lodge. Activity specific kind of thing....heck, I'm waiting for one neighbor to return a disc to another neighbor so I can then borrow it to plow under part of a grazing pasture to make a big foot plot. If I plow under enough grass, maybe the deer will hang around my place this fall instead of grazing on the alfalfa field on the farm next to us. Haven't measured it yet, but the dimensions look like about an acre and a half of stuff that should draw 'em in like iron filings to a magnet. Too hot and dry to plant right now, though. I have pulled The Express over this plot repeatedly with the sonar turned on, and there's not a single walleye to be found out there, so it might as well be put to some good use. Image
