Can the average archer...
actually tell the difference when shooting an arrow with a straightness tolerance of +/-.001, and +/-.006? The .006 arrows seem to be much more affordable than the "better" arrows. I know it`s a stupid question. I`m just knocking some of the rust off the bowhunting forum before we start getting busy on here.

One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who did not whine, nag, or bitch.
But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.

Re: Can the average archer...
As bad as I have been shooting as of late, I actually wish I was shooting bent shafts. I might in fact be able to hit what I'm aiming at if I were. I do this crap every summer where I shoot terrible for about a month. Luckily, my poor shooting would still keep me in or near the heart of a deer, but I'm telling you if it isn't bow torque or a release punch on every other shot these days..... Man it just pisses me off.
170: To answer your original question, I couldn't tell you the first thing about arrow straightness on any brand of shaft. For all I know, all of my shafts could be the worst thing going. PS

Re: Can the average archer...
I honestly don't know. I shoot Carbon Express, I believe they are .0025" garunteed.
What is odd, and unexplainable to me is that last night I was shooting and getting sighted in/tuned and was shooting groups. My 20, 35, and 50yds groups were almost identical.
Right around 2.5-4" groups which is horrible for 20yds and great (for me) at 50yds. If I can keep up the 50yds groups, I may talk myself into stretching my max yard limit for hunting. This was only the 3rd practice session of the year for me though. I shot a groups at 50 last year that was so tight, I actually yelled BULLCHIT! when I got a close look at it.
Surely I can't shoot 3 arrows into a 2-2.5" group at 50, but it happened.
I've only hit one game animal over 25yds with an arrow, the last 5yrs of so that has been my max hunting range. 6yrs ago though, I hit a big tom turky at 60 yds or so, and he ran off, never to be found. That turned me off of taking anything other than chip shots.

If you are doing that Dave-t, you could roast me right now. Like I said, I go through this nonsense every year up and until I get my groove on. I might shoot 2 shots perfect and the third I'll screw up.

Re: Can the average archer...
I was having a lot of fun shooting long last night. I about wore myself out at 35-50yds, and then thought I better get one more 20yds group. It was the worst of the day at any range, 5-6" or so. I tuckerd myself out and had to quit before I lost an arrow.
I had big plans to update my sight and rest this year, but if I keep shooting like this, I ain't going to mess with a single thing.

PS it may be that you have a shooting slump in the middle of the summer because it is real hard to see the pins and the target with sweat pouring all around your eyes and a couple of gnats buzzing around your eyes and ears....Man I hate that
That's funny you don't look Druish.

Re: Can the average archer...
I shoot the recurve for the first two weeks. Then the recurve in the morning, and the cheater bow at night. This keeps me from worrying too much about groups. If I hit the target with the recurve at 15 yards I am happy. By the time I pick up the compound, I seem to be right on.
PS. Why, after all your years of shooting do you still suffer from trigger punch? That seems like a rookie problem. Do you actually slap at it?

Re: Can the average archer...
I don't know Counts. It isn't a bad problem really, but I am aware that I am either torquing the bow or punching when I see wobble in the arrow. Last night I put 4 shafts touching one another in about a quarter sized spot at 20 yards. 2 arrows flew perfect, and 2 wobbled. I knew on the 2 that wobbled that I had done something wrong and it pissed me off although they were still clean kills. This bow here seems to be a little more difficult to handle than previous bows. But, I will be fine I am sure. I go from grooving shafts, to sucking for a month, and back to grooving. It is more mental than anything.

Re: Can the average archer...
That sounds more like hand torque to me. I don't know how you use your bow hand. If you try to close your hand on the shot, I would try a VERY loose grip without completely opening your hand. That way you will not have to close your grip on the shot. That would at least tell you on what end your problem is coming from.

I use a very loose grip. But, every now and again, I can feel the palm of my hand barely touch the riser when I release. I shoot a completely open grip.

Is your bow real short. Mine is 32". I have never noticed it to be less forgiving than any other bow I have shot. I have always wondered how true that rule of thumb is.

I think mine is 31". Compared to longer AtoA bows, I can notice a difference. However, hand torque is hand torque regardless of the length of the bow.

Re: Can the average archer...
Counts: I finally checked my bow through paper this weekend because even when I was whacking the center of the bull and shooting good groups, I had some degree of arrow wobble. 3 shots and 3 lowleft tears in paper. The only thing I can figure that has changed is the string might have stretched some, but, my peep hasn't rotated any so I don't think this is it. I did have a string silencer below my d-loop that popped out about a week back. I was wondering if that would change things. Anyway, I put a new disk in the biscuit, and I plan to put a new silencer back on the string. Then, I'll retune and resight. Man this aggrivates me at this time of the year. I just don't like messing with stuff on my bow. PS

Re: Can the average archer...
I had my peep sight fall out when shooting a couple weeks back. After getting it put back in I had to re-tune and re-sight in. The smallest change in a bow set up, really affect the whole shabang.

What kind of silencer? Was it tied in, or tied on?
