Sealine Reels
I've been thinking about getting another lincounter reel. I have a 27 series Sealine, and was wondering about the 17 for the next one. The 27 seems huge to me, and I certainly don't need that much line capacity. The 17 will hold 320yds of 10lb mono, and that seems like plenty. If you use the dreaded f-f-fireline, the capacity goes up. I won't be using it for leadcore. I found a reel for that (thanks for the tip, Lakebumb).
If my line of reasoning is messed up, please set me straight. I like the 27, but just think I want a smaller reel.

Re: Sealine Reels
Bullitt,
I don't own a Sealine 17 but from looking at the Cabela's Walleye catalog the only difference (other than size) is the gear ratio and the price (they're $5 cheaper). Based on what I'd heard about the reliability of the 27's I bought two last year. Here is a thread from WC I started last year that gives some good info on how to spool Fireline (or any superline) onto these reels. I used the two reel method since I had two empty reels. Worked slick.

Re: Sealine Reels
Bullitt....I got a 17 just before the Stockton tournement. I needed another decent trolling reel for use with fireline.
The 17 is probably just what you're looking for. As good as the 27 but smaller. As for the fireline use, I just spool up partially with mono and then tie back to back uni-knots to splice in the fireline. Just make sure you get enough Fireline on the reel so that the splice is never a factor while fishing or fighting a fish. I can't imagine anyone needing more then 300 feet of fireline. I haven't looked at Bumps' website and the 2 reel method but it is probably a way to get your reel perfectly filled to capacity without the guesswork.....

I believe Ackermannsacre has both styles, if he'd ever quit working so much and get on here where people appreciate him...
Nice to hear from you, Bumps!

Re: Sealine Reels
Maybe I need to read about spooling up Fireline on a line counter reel. One of my new ones had a "continuous line feed malfunction" on Stockton last week. For some reason, the spool would not drop out of gear to allow the line to peel off. If I took all the tension off the spool, it would release the line and work normally....the clicker was fine and the gear lever was working OK, so maybe the reel just has some dust in the mechanism from being trailered to the lake....however, it was in a reel bag to protect from just that occurrence. I did not see any evidence of the Fireline digging into itself on the spool....????????

PD,
Surprisingly I have four 27LC SeaLines, two 27 and three 17 Daiwa AccuDepth Line Counters. The 17's work great for mono or fireline spliced as noted above. I have two set up with fireline and one with mono. Not enough room for leadcore on the 17's.

Re: Sealine Reels
Thanks guys, the 17 sounds like just what I'm looking for. I'll just have to be careful about how much backing I put on.
Now I just have to get to Springfield, hope that BPS has one is stock, get it to the lake and into the boat unseen by the Finance Dept. Once it's in the boat, it's been there forever.

Re: Sealine Reels
I have four 17's for mono and FireLine, two of the 27's for segmented leadcore and two of the 47's for straight leadcore.
Sorry guys, I'm in the middle of a down to the studs and joists remodel of our one and only bathroom, so spending most of my time in there. Set the new whirlpool in place today and hopefully will get the toilet set in the next day or two. Be nice to get this porta-potty out of my front yard!

Don't forget the wax ring--what we in Wisconsin affectionately called the turd baffle!

Re: Sealine Reels
"turd baffle"??

Good thing we are between moderators, PD or you might have to eat those words!
I sneaked up to BPS today and picked up the 17Sealine, and an 8'6" Walleye Angler rod. Now I just have to get 'em down to TR, and into the boat.
Have you tried the "Walleye Rouges"? I bought a couple today. I really like the size, but I wish they were suspending. They will be by the time I tie them on.

Bullitt, how exactly do you plan to make these non-suspending Rogues into suspending Rogues, praytell?

Re: Sealine Reels
Oh, it will have a high dollar "turd" baffle for sure! By the end of this week every single piece of pipe and anything that remotely connects to the plumbing system in this house will be brand new, all new faucets kitchen and bath, new toilet, new laundry connections, new water softner, new hot water heater and all new drain and vent piping! I think I still have a boat out in the garage somewhere!

Ahemmmm! Such talk is expected of Cheeseheads, but the rest of you should be ashamed! Go to your rooms and don't come out until time to go to Hooters this Thursday. The politically correct word is "floater"....like when I lived in a fraternity house in college and we would make high octane punch with Mountain Dew (yep, it's been around that long) and float Baby Ruth candy bars in it....the punch would be iced down in a commode bowl. I never asked where the social chairman got the toilet.....after two or three drinks it didn't matter anyway.

Re: Sealine Reels
PD...a hint from an old bassin' guy...talk to the guys over in the fishing department of your employer. Ask for a sheet of SuspenDots. Those are little circles of thin lead sheeting with adhesive on the back. They are designed to be attached to crankbaits to change to buoyancy...just be sure to keep them close to the centerline, or at least an equal amount on each side...also watch the front to back balance.
With a relatively thin lure like a Rogue it doesn't take much to give it zero buoyancy.
