MOCraig

Post by GoGop » August 6th, 2005, 1:10 pm

My question may not mean much if you haven't seen Tombstone, but here it is;

At one point in the movie Doc tells Wyatt that Ringo wants revenge, but at another (previous) point in the movie he tells some other guys that it's not revenge Ringo wants, but a reconning.
What does he mean by reconning? Image

He means a lawful recompense for his unlawful acts.

I thought he just meant Ringo had a "death wish."

I've got a question on something else Doc said but I'll reserve it for another time so as not to hyjack the topic.
'Carpe Diem' does not mean 'fish of the day.'

I don't recall the specific scene, but I think the word is "reckoning." In that case, Passthru is right.

OK, so that's been answered.

Now my question. At the end when Doc is dying he looks down at his feet and he got a gleem in his eye and said; "ain't that funny." Then he died.

What did he mean by that?

BTW, I think "you gonna jerk that pistol and go to work or you just gonna stand there and bleed?" is the best line in the movie.

I don't see why Ringo would be wanting justice brought down on himself, unless you're saying he felt it was justice to try killing Wyatt. Image

DSG,
I always took that statement as referring to his bare feet, because in so many westerns I've seen the gunslingers don't want to die with their boots on. I think he was amazed that his death was to be peaceful.
As a comical example, have you ever seen "Support your local gunfighter" with James Garner? At the end Swifty Morgan is dieing and is only concerned with getting his boots off. He has some guy tugging on them like crazy. Image Image

I believe that he WAS referring to the old adage that cowboys always die with their boots on yet he was barefoot at the time. And the line about "you gonna jerk that....." didn't he say "smoke wagon" instead of "pistol" or am i thinking of another movie?

And why are we asking MOcraig so much about the movie?

yeehaw, actually he said "are you gonna do somthin, or stand there and bleed?" I was wrong.

He did use the terms "smoke wagon" and "pistol" both earlier in the exchange.

Lines I also like were; "Hurts don't it?"

and

"you back that queen again you son of a b!tch I'll blow you right up that wildcats @ss. And god dammmit Jr how many times do I gotta tell you to get that cigar outta my face. Christ allmighty, it's like playin cards with my brothers kids or something, you nerve rackin sons a bitches." Image

It's more about terminology than the movie, but it happens that this movie used some unusual terminology that needed to be researched a bit. (I cain't figgur it out!) Image

GoGop....if you remember earlier in the movie Morgan axes Wyatt about spirituality and talks about when people die they see a light? Well, then when Morgan was dying he told Wyatt that he didn't see a "god damm thing."

Move forward to when Doc was dying, He looked around and said "ain't this funny," and had this faraway look in his eyes.

I always thought that he was saying that he saw the light.

That might be out there but I think it's kina an interesting theory.

Dieing in those days it was believed that if you died with your boots on you were earth bound and would never reach heaven IE Doc did see the light but only when he noticed his boots weren't on.

Yeah 2B, you messed up. It works as a paraphrase, but not as a quote.

DSG,
I understand what you're saying, but I didn't think that because he was looking at his feet rather than some random area.
