Question.....

Post by Great White Hunter » August 8th, 2005, 12:09 pm

Has anyone been seeing any bucks without velvet?

I saw one the other night that was losing his velvet already, which I thought is early. He was a little buck anyway, so maybe that had something to do with it.

Game camera pics are still showing full velvet at the Tick Farm.

Saw five saturday. All had the velvet off. I always thought toward the end of August was the right time for that. I wonder if it has to do with the dryness.

Good question RB...About 3 weeks ago I was seeing a few scrub bucks with velvet and then a few days later it was gone and now all of them are without velvet....I thought at the time it didnt take long for it to disappear.
Paragraph break....Wonder if it has to do with their food source or something else? I have seen about 10 different bucks, none large, that none have velvet.

Flake,

There was what looked like an 8 pointer dead in the ditch on East side of 61, about 9 miles S. of Bowling Green.

I saw him when I was driving by there on Sat. It didn't look like he still had velvet. I thought that was a bit odd.

I saw a nice buck Sat. evening that still had velvet. I haven't seen one this summer yet that had shed the velvet.

I did notice that the buck in our area had started growing Image 3+weeks earlier this year than last year. I saw bucks in early April of '04 with racks. This year though I saw bucks already growing velvet in mid April.

Down my way they are still in velvet but have started to see some scraped up cedar trees so they are prolly starting to shed. Image

All the bucks on the game cam last week are completely free of velvet. I saw some small bucks Saturday evening and none of them had velvet either.
