To bad it's not bowfish and release for old waterhogs like that guy... The population of alligator gar like that have been decimated in the last 50 years as there natural breeding cycles are not able to compete with modern mans appetite for sport fishing. That fish was probably older than any of us could imagine and he's one of a rare breed these days.

Agree with that. That is why I cannot, and don't, support the wack em and stack em mentality of bowfishing for them. I am averaging a gator gar about every 2 years now, and that is plenty. Because of the good meat they have, and the poor reputation (undeserved, btw), commercial fishing has put a hurt on them in the south. I would not say the pop's are decimated, but they are certainly not what they once were.
I have heard many different theories on age, but that fish could easily be 30-40 years old.

See alot of em in Florida. Never anything of that size but alot of smaller ones up to about 40 inches or so. Dang things always went after the shiners when bass fishing.

Sam Rayburn Res. in TX. There are not large gator gar in MO anywhere. Someone shot one near Cape a few years ago, like 115 lbs. I have seen a few gar that may have been gator gar, but not sure. They just are not here anymore.

Re: Aim Low Gator Gar pix
Yeah, that gar was shot by a buddy of mine in the Diversion Channel a few years back. David Smith is his name. Now, I saw one back in the early 80s on the St. Francis River below Wappapello. It was probably 6 feet long. Only one I am aware of that I ever saw and I'm still not 100% sure it was an alligator gar. That dude just dwarfed the longnose we were seeing, so it almost had to be one. My grandpa said it was an alligator gar and he lived on the river, so I have to believe him. I know of one that was caught on a trot-line down there a few years back. But, they are few and far between.

Thought I had heard of some on BullShoals, but I could be wrong....may have been an alligator turtle or something like that.
Hey maybe you guys could shoot one of them.
