layout blinds
I just got a new X-lander layout blind.
What's the best way to grass it? Do you grass the whole thing each trip, or will some of it stay with you?
I plan to mud it up today.

Re: layout blinds
mud it up....load it up with grass that is the color of what you hunt the most as a base....then add to it each time you hunt with the color that is natural to that specific location.
If you keep it in the back of your truck or in a trailer unprotected, be prepared for a bunch of the cover to blow off each trip...if you keep it in a trailer or have a bed cover...don't expect it to be a problem.

Re: layout blinds
Thanks Dabs. I figure that a lot of the grass will fall out when I fold it up to carry it.
I was able to put a doz dekes and my "man purse" inside and still fold it up. Should make things easier to pack in.

Re: layout blinds
Okay, the short version, without the diagram and the links. First of all, this was not my invention... a dude over on the Cafe passed it along, and it flat works.
Get yourself a case of florists Raffia, a bunch of ZIP ties, and a bunch of old snap-style wooden clothespins. Spraypaint the clothespins beige brown green or black, dpending on what color "grass" you want. Lay out your Raffia on the lawn and spraypaint it to yer liking. Great thing about paintin it is, you get a two-tone or three-tone color scheme because after it's dry, you gather it up and mix it around. Or you can leave it Natural which is the color of marsh grass. IMO an all natural color bundle is too bright. I painted mine with some swaths of black.
Run your ZIP tie thru the spring of the clothespin. Get a handful of Raffia, and close the ZIP tie around it, trim excess zip tie off, you're done!
There, you have a wad of tough, custom-tailored color grass that you can now clip to your Stubble Straps or whatever your Mfg. calls the grassing loops. You can leave these on, or take em off and carry the grass bunches in a separate bag. I have a set of natural color, a set of all green (for winter wheat) and a mixed bunch.
It's a helluva lot cheaper method than buying those ready made camo bundles (Killer weed I think?). It's the same deal, and you did it yerself.
If you have a little kid or two around, they can make these while you drink beer and supervise. They'll end up with all of em clipped to there clothes, which is funny to see.
There ya go. Glad I could help.

Thanks Major. It sounds very easy, and that's key for me.

Re: layout blinds
You can make 10 of these grass bundles in less time than it takes to read about it.
Credit goes to Feetdownbellyup over on the Cafe. His idea, and a damned good one IMO

Re: layout blinds
Thanks Major! Just the kind of help I was lookin' for. I knew someone had come up with a good way to grass one of these.
You can do the same type of cover on a permanent blind with the branches off of fake Christmas trees. They have wire in 'em and can be bent around posts, etc., and take paint very well.
Thanks again.

Not only that, but when duck season was over, we just set the blind out at the curb, and the trash guy took it to the Used Tree Lot.
