What type of broadheads you shootin?
I am looking for a new broadhead this year. I was using Rocky Mountain Gators. I prefer a mech. of some type, what about those Atom Broadheads by Arrow Dynamic Solutions? What's everyone shootin?

Myself, I stay away from Mechanical broadheads, I just simply can not trust them 100%. I have shot several different fixed blade broadheads, but I always end up with Muzzys.

I have never had any trouble with my mech. I have tried muzzy's, but just don't care for them. Personal preference I guess.

Re: What type of broadheads you shootin?
Freind I work with used KMechanicals for several years, He swore by them, we used to get into big long winded discussions about thier reliability, and the problems with fixed blades planeing.
Then that following bow season he had a 140" class buck walk by his stand, it was a quartering away shot, he said it was the best shot he had ever pulled off. But he did not get that buck, when the head contacted the buck, it bounced off, he figured the blades opening kicked the arrow away. he has used fixed blades ever since then and wont even look at a mechanical, this is after killing countless deer with them.
I knew another guy who shot a buck that was in the 130", he killed the buck, but he didnt find it until the spring when running cams, the arrow was there and the blades had hair in them, but they was not open, and had not ever opened. he got the rack, but it was not how he wanted it to turn out...he now uses fixed blades.
Im sure that the newer mechanicals are fine, and I hear much more good than bad, but it only takes loosing one real nice buck to make a hunter change his opinion, by then its to late.
But you are right, Every bow hunter out there prefers his choice for one reason or another, it truely is a very personal sport.
I have however really been looking over the new mechanicals that when they hit, the blades slide back and open, instead of flipping from a forward position to a rearward position, I wonder how well these broadheads work in the real world.
The guy at the archery shop was also showing me the new fixed blade heads on the market, the ones that are very short, he told me they fly exactly the same as a feild point, I have a hard time believing that, but i may buy a few and try them out...I wish I could remember what they are called now

Re: What type of broadheads you shootin?
I really like my Gator's by Rocky Mountain. The fold back and fly just like a field point, but upon impact two ears, for lack of better words, up by the point cause the blades to flip forward. These blades are free-floating, so if it hits bone, the blade slides back closed until it passes the bone, then opens back up. This is all done with no springs, which is what I want to avoid. If you get a chance, look on Cabelas for them. I will probably keep using them, since I have had good luck with them. All of my kills have been clean-throughs with very large blood loss, even on the shots that weren't as good as I had wanted them to be.

I am going to stay with the fixed. Too many things can go wrong with the mechanicals. I have heard too many horror stories.
That's funny you don't look Druish.

Triton: On one hand you say you are going to stay with the mechanical and on the other you are talking bad about them. Which is it boy?
Now, I use mechanicals and have done so for about 4 years now. Every deer I have shot at with a mechanical has been down within 150 yards. Most within 50 yards. I have shot one buck right through the shoulder blade and he was down within 15 yards. Now, I realize that there are potential problems with them as some have elluded to. But, I have yet to see it. A properly placed shot will kill the animal without a doubt, mechanical or fixed blade. Furthermore, there is not a broadhead and shaft known to man that will bust through the point on the shoulder that I consider nonpenatrable. I hit a deer probably 8 years ago on this very point with a good fixed blad head and got less than an inch of penetration. So, on a properly placed shot, mechanicals are as good as any fixed head. I use Spitfires BTW. PS

MoCraig, you can be down right helpful down on this bowhunting forum.
I still shoot the Muzzy 100's. Can't see me changing that at any time soon.

Re: What type of broadheads you shootin?
I have never heard of complaints from folks who have Slick Tricks for a couple seasons.
I use the G-5 Montec. It is a good head, with great penetration. They fly very good, but do have some noise from the b-head itself. I will continue to use them however.
I have also had excellent results with the Rocket Steelhead mechanical. If I were going to use a mech head again, this would be the one. They fly great, penetrate about as well as any other head I've used, and are tough.
I just decided there is nothing better than a cut to the tip head, so I forked out the dough for the G-5's. They are practically indestructible, and should last me for several years...unless something else catches my eye.

I shoot Spitfires. PS shoots Spitfires. That should be enough to convince the rest of you knuckledraggers to switch.

Rafe, in the future please give only serious answers to serious questions. There is a time, and place for your tomfoolery, and hi-jinx. The bowhunting forum is no longer your playground. You have been warned.

But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.
