Looking for new ground.
I am looking for some new ground to hunt on this fall. I still have the 1500 acres or so I use down around Butler, but there are getting to be too many morons hunting on it, and I lost all my private hunting land around Nevada.(Over 1500 acres of perfect timber and food plots!

Re: Looking for new ground.
There is a tri state lease company in the area with many spots near your area. I will get Greg ( Duck me Running ) to post it up. I forget the name of it. Otherwise, do some door knocking. I found it fairly easy to get access for bowhunting. Rifle hunting on the other hand can be pretty difficult. Send DMR and PM and I am sure he will get you some information. Also, the conservation areas produce good bucks every year.

Oh to be a gazillionaire

One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who did not whine, nag, or bitch.
But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.

MoC,
Do you usually get to hunt when/where you want, or do you often find your selection already booked? I'm not referring just to deer season, but for all the hunting or fishing trips you schedule.

That's not the club I belong to, but I'd pretty much mirror MoCraig's comments.
Kurt, I rarely have a problem getting a spot for ANY type of pursuit.

GoGop,
I am also a member of the association that Craig is in (him and I hunt together) We did not know each other before hand but met the first year he was a member and since I felt sorry for him getting lost in the woods all the time....I took him with me.
I have been a member since 1999 and I don't know how many total days I have hunted since joining but probably close to 200-225 and I have only had my first pick taken maybe 8 or 10 times....never my second. Obviously, opening day of rifle season is a big one, but I have always had the opportunity to hunt my first choice to this point. Never had anyone else fishing when I want, opening weekend of turkey season is sometimes tough to get first choice...but again, never had to go farther than second.
Something like this:
Archery Deer - 4
Rifle Deer - 0 (Called as early as allowed (30 Days) to
reserve spot)
Turkey - 3
Fishing - 0
Waterfowl - 1
Upland - I have never been
Small Game - 0
Predator - 0
Even though I have had someone else hunting where I want more times with archery than anything....that is what I hunt for the most...by far. 60% of my days afield are archery, 25% are turkey, 15% is spread between the rest of the items listed above.
I hope this answers your question.
As far as cost goes. I dont think myself or my three friends that I hunt with have a bunch of money to throw away, but when it is what you love to do....it is money very well spent.
I did the free thing for years (Mark Twain National Forest and knocking on doors) We have permission on about 2500 acres in Schuyler County, 2000 acres in Carter County and about 800 acres in Taney County but you never know who was showing up and that can be dangerous and frustrating. It was worth it to me to know that when I reserve a piece of ground to hunt that only I am on that area. Trespassers are rare, but occasional...the main reason, we prosecute.

Don't argue with an idiot, people watching may not be able to tell the difference.

DMR,
I noticed the leases the club that Craig and Shawn belong to trend to the west. Is the club you belong to similar, or are they more central or eastern?

C&C,
The majority are Western, but it's getting better.
Apparently, lease prices are MUCH higher over here.
I don't mind the drive if the quality is there.

Re: Looking for new ground.
I will weigh in here.
I think if you are bowhunting or deer hunting it is different than duckhunting....maybe.
Bow hunting is pretty much a solitude sport. Rifle hunting is a bit different, but you still spend time alone. Joining a club like that would make sense.
Duck hunting is a team sport. And the thing I enjoy about it just as much as anything else is the team changes. My b-i-l belonged to the Dorn club and I am not here to bash it...but not everything about it shines all the time. It served a purpose for him getting access to land and he knew a couple people in the club and bowhunted with them.
If you know say...two or three other folks in the club you are limited to your hunting accomplisses. They used to allow the same guest like once or something in each season and you paid like $20.00. I think they cut that out for the most part now...so...
What I am saying is if you hunt with a small knit group of folks and they also are members it would be a good dealio...if you hunt with an array of folks throughout the year, you are gonna be hunting land other than the clubs for much of the season (s).
To each their own, so to speak.
