Using Blood Tracking Dogs

Post by deer_slayer » August 18th, 2005, 10:41 am

I stumbled across a site a couple of years ago that was talking about using dogs on a leash to track wounded big game animals, in particular, whitetailed deer. The idea of this really interested me and I began doing research on this and have been ever since. I purchased a book call "Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer" written by John Jeanneney. I have talked with John on the phone about his dogs and how he has helped people in other states get the legislation changed to make this use legal. I'm still reading his book, but I can say already that it is a great read. Now I know the best answer is to only take ethical shots and have good shot placement, but lets face it, if you hunt long enough, eventually something will go wrong and you will either lose a blood trail, or find the deer a few days later after the coyotes have had their feast. I personally have had at least a few times when having a blood trailing dog would have made a world of difference. I think using the dogs on a leash makes a huge difference too. It keeps the dogs under control and should be less of a disturbance to other hunters. From talking with John, it seems that Illinois is VERY close to getting their legislation changed to make this legal. There are others here in Missouri working on getting ours changed as well. I for one, am all for it and I am trying to find more ways to get involved in getting this changed. I was wondering what your opinions are on this and if there are any of you on this site that may want to get involved in getting this legalized. Please visit John's site to find out more on how they use blood trailing dogs or to get more info on his book. John is also part of an organization called Deer Search, that I think is a great program and is worth checking out. It is great to see how they are helping fellow hunters retrieve game that may have been lost.

I did not know it was illegal. I have used one in the past. It was a bird dog, but it found the deer.
