TTTN -
You're dealing with a bunch of commercial-headed mofo's 'round here. Now I don't know if my knife is quite up to all the standards you outlined, but I guaran-dam-tee the custom knife I gots would put Gerbers, Bucks and all those other mass-produced, over-the-counter P.'s O. S. to shame. ...and it's antler-handled to boot!
Prior to this knife I had some top-of-the-line Gerber or Browning that was supposed to have a titanium finish or some crap like that. fornicating blade edge laid over the first time I used it, and I hadn't even started on the pelvic bone yet.

Re: Knives
I get by with a couple common knives, my main one is a Schrade, but I take care of my equipment, and know how to sharpen them.

Re: Knives
ODF-You lost some credibility when you said a gut hook is for puzzies. I bet you use a flat rock to hammer nails. Using a knife to bust the pelvic bone on a deer follows the same logic. That is best done by a sharp axe back at camp. Not really necessary to bust it when you are "field dressing".
Re: Knives
Back in the day I tried to carry a 6" blade Buck knife. Way too heavy. It did go through a pelvis like butter, however.

Re: Knives
Guthooks make a knife much less efficient, counts. Totally unnecessary as well.
I've got several knives. I have one small and one large Anza and two custom knives that I profiled and ground myself. Both of those knives I had heat treated by a custom knife maker here in Springfield. All good knives are made of tool steel.
Dave you may know how to sharpen your knives, but it becomes a different task on good quality steel. Once the edges are beveled correctly, lapping the edges are all that's necessary. And that also depends on what kind of edge you want.

Re: Knives
'scuse me. How do you figger that not using a guthook is kin to hammering a rock with nails. It ain't all that difficult to lift the hide, make a small incision, slide the knife in (edge up for you slow folks) and then slice the hide wide open. Done it for many years...without a gut hook...and have yet to slice open any innards. :shakinmyhead:
But I love your contradictory statements.
so which is it, is it not necessary, you use a sharp axe or a buck knife that cuts through it "like butter"??? Ya goof!!

If you know what you're doing a gut hook is a waste of steel. Now go hammer nails with your sharp axe or buck knife.

TTTN - You may have to draw the goof a picture before he'd understand.
BTW - Who's the knifemaker you're referring to in Spfld? I believe the Crosswhite fellow is from down there.

Re: Knives
I can't remember the term, but I like the softer steel of the Schrade blades. They do not hold an edge from year to year, but it takes no time to get them very sharp. After field dressing 2-3 deer, I sharpen it again. It's not the best steel in the world, but once it dulls, it doesn't take me much time to get it right back to scary sharp.

Re: Knives
That is just low grade low carbon steel. Good steel can be as hard or soft as you like depending on the heat treat and temper. There is a balance between very hard steel and very durable easy to sharpen steel.
Dave, I promise you that anyone one of my knives will whip up a scary sharp edge as fast and easily as yours, but will hold it 10 times as long.
I know a custom knife maker very well, and his work is amazing. I never had any idea about the properties of steel and how it can be transformed into such and artwork of technology.

Re: Knives
About 1/8 of a whole knife. That is one thing I've never understood. Hunters are concerned about thier firearms and gear and willing to spend money on important things such as those, but have total disregard for owning crappy knives, which really is one of the true essentials for anyone considering themselves a hunter.

Don't know 'xactly who TTTN is talking about but, if the dude is in a good mood you MIGHT get ONE handle for that!
Seems like I paid a ways north of $100 for my knife and that was without a sheath. Had a leather shop make a nice sheath for it for around $25.Politicians are like shoemakers who make pretty shoeboxes but forget to make the shoes.
