Humble Pie

Post by BornBad » November 14th, 2005, 11:05 am

Saturday, November 12. I got myself set up at 6am looking at a ridge. ?About 8am, a group of 7 or 8 does and yearlings walk casually along side the ridge stopping here and there for a bite. I take aim at one of the mature does, 60 yards shot and fire ?Nothing! The noise got their attention, but they still continue all casual like. I load and fire again ?Nothing! This time the noise spooked them, the mature does trot up a little and stop, still less than 100 yards. I load and fire again ?Nothing. With that, the mature does break for cover with no sign of injury. There were 3 or 4 fawns still on the ridge so I take aim at one of them and fire ?nothing! WTF!!! Then, the fawn I aimed at walks down the ridge and starts grazing not more than 25 yards from me. I can not fornicating believe it, I reach to my pack to grab another bullet, no more fornicating bullets.

I called it and spent the rest of Saturday target practicing. I just could not believe I missed that many times, I?m better than that. That kinda chit is sloppy and I darn well know it. Initially I blamed the scope, thinking that I had bumped it off on the walk into the woods. However, the scope was accurate when I was target practicing.

Sunday, I go out to the same ridge. 1 hour into it, the same group walks out on the ridge. I get up, take a deep breath, told myself to take my time and I put the crosshairs on another 60 yard shot. I had beaten myself up for the past 24 hours, now and I am gonna do this right? I miss. I reload, I miss again. The group scattered, the doe I was aiming at trots back up the ridge and stops at an angle that would be unsafe to shoot. I put that doe in the crosshairs to watch for any sign of injury. With her donkey filling the circle of my scope, she drops some chit, fans her donkey and walks out of view.

I feel like crap. I thought I was better than that kinda chit.

BB, you need to stick with fishing.

What were you shooting BB?

Ther is a chance there is a few dead deer layin in the timber if you didn't go check it out. I did the same thing about 20 years while shooting a .308 . Doe jumped the fence and went to grazing....I shot her and she took like three steps and went back to grazing. I shot again and she took about 10 steps and turned and looked my way...she was on top of a hill so I didn't shoot. Madder than heck that I could have missed her twice. The next weekend I went back to the same place, only I walked out in a different direction...over the hill about 35 yards layed the doe, which coyotes had pretty much finished by that time. I will never assume I missed again.

I was shooting a .270

I did hike up the ridge and look the area over real well, no sign of blood.

BB, it's happend to the best of us on bad days. The simple fact that you are disgusted with yourself for doing something sloppy moreover simple not killing one is about the best signpost to your positive attitude about the outdoors.

I wish there were more folks like you as opposed the the shoot-till-your-empty and don't give a chit crowd you hear yelling in the woods about how awesome it was to burn 12 rounds at a deer.

I had a really enjoyable opening morning. There were a few guys that hunted our property (notice the past tense use of were and hunted). Anyway about 7 am I see orange walking over the ridge toward me about 800 yards away, then I hear 4 shots then 4 more (they had to reload) and deer running everywhere. So I decided to go and investigate, well the son of one of the guys that had permission to hunt our farm tells me that he shot a doe in the head, when he got down to check it, it ran off. So he said that if I saw a doe with half her face gone, it was his. He was laughing while telling me about it. I just walked away. What a bunch of idiots.

I agree with TTTN....that is except for his first sentence.

BB....is it to late or would you like further help diagnosing the problem? Tell me, when you look through your scope do the deer appear closer of further away? Image
