How many shots does it take?

Post by X Bow T » November 14th, 2005, 5:56 pm

The deer that wouldn't die
Slow weekend in the funnel. Not a thing til the late sat. blowing doe, then two crossing the creek and into the thicket.

Then Sun. am, saw does right off, had 'em right behind us. Then I heard something coming into the creek, pointed for my brother to listen, twice, he then saw momma broadside at 15 yards, waited for her to cross the creek and.... BOOOM! That muzzleloader 'bout blew our ears out, from inside the "Throne" shack. She went down. Later we found her, and had the rubber gloves on ready to field dress her, then our neighbors finally lit up the bottoms from downstream. I said let just hunker down here with our guns and wait for the fleeing deer. Here they came, saw us, ran back and up the thickest part of the hillside. We were both on Momma then he fired a split second before me, when she put on the brakes. Bullet deflected, I moved to the better shot on the little one and blasted the .73 caliber (shotgun)twice, hitting the small one, it stumbled straight back down the hill and bedded in a small bush 10 yards from me. We talked for about 15 minutes, then I got up to see if she expired yet, Nope she trucked off down the creek onto the private land, I yelled Jeremy get her, thinking he would shoot. Nope, he chased her like a junkyard dog. I Found good blood. We headed for Walt's place to ask for permission to find her. He and I headed down on the 4 wheeler, got big momma loaded up and went for the search. 3 of us, I took the creek line, nothing, I hit every brush pile in the bottoms looking for that elusive 3rd deer in a season. Like a great bird dog, My bro passed her and stopped, she took off back up the creek, and was out of site. More blood found, 2 hours post hit. We looked again, nothing then we finally decided at the landowners request to take the one doe back to camp, and to come back and do a blind sweep of the bottoms. We all loaded up on the Honda. I was thinking darn, lost one. Jeremy yelled stop there she is, he shot and hit her back, Walt shot the .270 and missed, I watched without a gun. It took off again, more wounded, back leg blown out. I saw were it stopped, we stalked to it. I said put another round in it, before he could do just that. Walt walked up behind it .... slit it's throat, held it down let it take it's last breath, and pulled out it's beating heart. darn them country guys are tough. 3 coolers full. Bro got his first deer this year and I've had my best numbers year ever.

Let's hope the cool weather kicks up the activity.

You hit the thing with a .73 caliber? Since you said it was a shotgun, I'm guessing you were shooting a slug. You shot 2 slugs at a "little one". Geez, how bad of a hit does it have to be for a little deer to take a slug hit or two and keep going for that long?

I concur with all the above responses! Image

Oh, and to answer your question, it only takes ONE WELL-PLACED shot. Your title should be changed to "The deer that wouldn't die due to poor shot placement and/or piss-poor shooting"! Image
