JimDog: Back in October there were 3 laying there at that curve. 2 does and one 1.5 year old buck. Must be a dumping ground for carcasses.

Re: A Picture Story of a Mock Scrape Buck
That`s a cool set of pics right there. That buck is closer to 170 than it is to 160. I`m wondering if the smaller body is typical of a suburban buck. Are there any agricultural fields around there, Keith?

But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.

Where was the picture taken? Could you supply some directions or a map?

Re: A Picture Story of a Mock Scrape Buck
Urban deer don't have the best food and are smaller in body than farmland bucks. That buck may be 4.5+yrs and only weigh 160-170 dressed.
The 10pt I shot in Nov only went that in weight, and his neck looked much bigger than this one, no comparison in the rack though.
He does look young in the face, but his neck is developed. I'd guess he's no older than 4.5yrs, but could only be 3,5 with tremedous genes.

Re: A Picture Story of a Mock Scrape Buck
I put some numbers down and I came up with a gross score of exactly 170". But, I believe I gave the deer a little more mass than he has and I had 4" of deductions based upon the picture. There may be a bit more but you really cannot tell. Net score of 162". Heck, even if he was 140", he needs to be killed.

His mass isn't the best feature, but everything else is great. Great mainbeams, tine length, and symmetry, just really impressive.
Taking a deer like that any time is great, but video of a late season bow hunt with that sucker as the star would be the chit.

Deductions my azz, PS. Nets are for fishing.

I'm thinking more than 6" of deducts, but when there is that much rack to measure, it'll work out just fine.

Exactly 170 - the deer grew it, they should count every inch, and then some.

Re: A Picture Story of a Mock Scrape Buck
I think he is 3.5 yrs, and at least 170. I told Keith last night, "Booner" as soon as I saw it. Then again, I am crap at guessing scores, and I also think nets are for fishing and say "Booner" w/out regards to deducts. I do think his long tines mislead his mass measurements, and they are better than they appear, especially the 2nd and 3rd.
Even w/out the good food, if he was older than 3.5, I think his back would be more swayed, and nose more square.
Hopefully colder weather will have him coming thru in the daytime. You can see some of those bushes with green leaves...those bushes proved to be magnets in all our suburban spots late season last year.
The property owner saw 2 "big ones" together recently in the daytime, but said they didn't compare to the "monster at the top of the subdivision" that he has been seeing almost everyday. I am interested to find out if this is the monster or one of the big ones.

Re: A Picture Story of a Mock Scrape Buck
He is young looking in the face, but his mass can't be more than 4" on the h-2, 3, 4. Comparing it to his eye, which is typically 4" around.
I'm not saying to hold off, but next year that sucker could be a 180+. I wouldn't wait one more day to get on him though.

Re: A Picture Story of a Mock Scrape Buck
Robin, you are actually very right about the little bushes with green leaves being magnets for deer....It almost seems like they use them to go from place to place especially if there are a lot of them in the underbrush.
That's funny you don't look Druish.

Re: A Picture Story of a Mock Scrape Buck
Im not real good at figuring out scores on foot either. I tend to be too conservitive.
Dave, he may not give us a choice but to wait until next year..LOL. Who knows, I'm just hoping a late season hot doe or an empty belly will bring him or one of his buddys in. Like Robin said, the landowner says there are more than 1 big deer around. What we don't know, is what is "big" to him. He knows nothing about hunting and scores.
SF, the white pipe is what I believe to be some sort of property line marker.
Last night 3 does came in to the blind to eat on the green foilage Robin spoke of. I'm glad to see it is going to be a good late season snack like last year.

Re: A Picture Story of a Mock Scrape Buck
The coolest part of this hole thing is the presentation. First the pic of the scrapes, then Keith making the scrape and doctoring it up. Then the buck. Which is an absolute pig btw. He is a good 4 year old deer. Good neck and brisket. His back is curled a bit because of his positioning. A picture is worth a thousand words and these are some of the best string of pics I have ever come across. Really gets me exited I tell ya
