Late Season Breeding

Post by hunting170 » March 30th, 2006, 4:50 pm

A friend of mine got these pictures on his trail cam last week. Anyone care to guess when their momma might have gotten bred?

One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who did not whine, nag, or bitch.
But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.

That looks to be about the size of a September fawn. I'd say about 7 months back from January so I'm guessing in April/May.

That makes no sense 170. I think he's pulling your leg. Bucks can't breed without their Image.

Those aren't fawn spots this late. Some strange piebald patterning.

I read an interesting article a few years back. It stated that the rut could continue for as long as 8 months beginning in September. Interesting read.

I'd always heard that dropping testosterone lead to antler drop, which then left the buck without any sex drive. Once the Image are gone, the will to breed is gone, from what info I've read.

Dave: A buck may keep his Image up and into April. I saw one last year that had both sides on April 12. Then again, I have seen them with significant regrowth as early as May 1. You saw one just the other day that had some growth beginning. I feel it safe to say that there is no one way in which nature works things out.

I have a hard time believing that a fawn born in Nov can make it through the winter, but who knows?

PS in spring of '04 I still saw bucks with racks in early April, and in spring '05 I saw racks being started in early April. This spring on March 23rd was the earliest I've ever seen velvet growing. So I can't really explain the timing of all of that, and if it's based on the end of rutting activity, longer daylight, weather conditions, food etc.

It isn't like this winter was a typical Missouri winter.

Dave - how does the Wise buck play into this theory? Supposedly that buck had his sack ripped off/severed bad enough that the lack of testosterone is what caused the Image to remain in velvet....or something like that.

Cactus bucks, as they are called, grow Image that never harden or shed velvet. That buck would never shed his rack, or be able to successfully breed.
