Rifle for 9 year old
Re: Rifle for 9 year old
JD as this is going to be a "deer rifle - period" I would suggest a Savage 111 in .270 and a single 10 power min. scope. As far as managed recoil if you reload you can do your own recoil management. I own a Savage 111 in .270 and my middle daughter shoots it with little complaints and she is 7 yrs. old.

I would stick with 7mm-08 over the .270, it's a short action gun and quite as cabable, just without the kick.
If you want a slick rig, get a browning a-bolt micro hunter. Now that is a gun any kid can be proud of and it'll have a function thier whole life. I have one for Rachel and I still enjoy shooting it very much.

If you are truly concerned about safety, don't buy a lever action. I know this will cause more arguing, but what happens every time you load a lever action gun? You are cocked and locked. Only way to render safe is to pull the trigger and let the hammer down slowly.
I am not going to put something like that in the hands of my son and expect him to be able to safely do that while excited, cold and with gloves on.
Hope it all works, I am sure it will. By the way, .270 is too big for his first gun. Look at a gun show for a good bolt gun. I am a Remington man when it comes to rifles. You can pick up a Sportsman 788, a 700 or even an older Mohawk 600/660. The 600/660 would fit him perfectly at this age, but the only downside is a shorter barrel, which leads to more noise as was already talked about.
I have a Mowhawk in a .222 if you are interested in borrowing it to get him in the swing of rifles. It is a great little gun, just doesn't have the punch for deer hunting.
