Doubled up!

Post by Limbshot » October 12th, 2006, 2:26 pm

Well I took off yesterday afternoon to hunt the start of the cold front. I headed out to the new farm with a friend of mine. Got on my stand and immediately heard turkeys. I called back and got a good response. Long story short, I called in two nice gobblers and killed a 20 pound bird with 9.5 inch beard and 1/2 inch spurs. Hit him good, just above the left wing joint and exited above his right hip. Total recovery distance: 10 yards. Then at 5:45, I had a group of 4 does come up from behind me. The biggest doe stepped into a shooting lane at 22 yards. They were a little spooky due to the wind, so she reacted to my shot, she lunged forward and turned slightly away. I hit her a little far back, but the arrow took out the top of the liver, the back of her right lung and all of her left lung. The exit hole was perfect! She went about 80 yards total and piled up. So, one hunt, one gobbler (I am now tagged out on archery turkeys) and one big doe. Again, the NAP scorpion broadheads jacked this turkey up, very quick kill with short recovery. This is the first deer I have killed with the Scorpion, but the bloodtrail was amazing. Very good penetration, and very large exit hole.

Congratulations, awesome job!

Just curious, what type of call were you using for the turkeys and what sounds were you making with it to draw in the gobblers? Also, did they call (gobble?) back to you or just sneak in quietly?

Thanks guys, I am still pretty pumped over the whole deal. One of the best hunts I have had in quite some time. Ironically I used the exact same arrow for this gobbler that I used to kill the hen a coule weeks back with the same head and everything, just diffeent blades. I may make that my designated turkey arrow now!

I was using a very raspy diaphragm that I believe is called the Raspy Cutter. It is made by a guy out of Lebanon, Missouri. I'll get the exact details for you and post them tomorrow. The call is supposed to duplicate the vocalizations of gobblers, and seems to do a fantastic job. The birds were very vocal. I was doing a very coarse three yelp sequence that duplicated the call they were making perfectly. I saw them walking out across the field and when I called to them they made a 90 degree left turn and came right to me. Everytime I called, they responded. On a side note, two weeks before, I called in a group of 6 gobblers using the same call and thought my wife was going to thump the lead birds, but he picked us off somehow!
