Deer Vocalizations

Post by Counts 2 » October 23rd, 2006, 1:50 pm

Saw a doe this morning that had a make on me with other deer around. She was making a spitting sound over and over. Never heard that before.

Hurry up, and invent a call that will mimic that sound. Like the snort, wheeze, and the buck growl, I`ve hunted 27 years, and never heard it. I did read a post on AT describing this sound though. There`s a window of opportunity here Counts 2...you better jump through it.

Since it sounds like a spit I doubt anyone except techno-hunters like youself would even but it. Maybe you are on to something.

It was interesting to see her make that sound over and over. She was seperated from the other 3 deer so I assume it is part of their alarm call.

Funny thing about that growl call. I was on my way to stand early morning before light. I was downwind of what was a large bodied deer by itself. I could tell it was a good buck but could not quite make out just how big a rack it had. He was standing maybe 30 yards from the stand I was planning to get in. I had just purchased that growl call maybe a week before. This buck did exactly like those bucks in the dvd demo when he noticed me approaching. Same exact sound. I was half afraid he would come my way and kick my donkey. I guess fortunately he could not smell exactly what I was.

Have you ever heard a buck cough? I tell you this 8 pointer last year came in chasing a doe. He was grunting every breath. Well, he lost her trail right under my stand. Then, this big 10 pointer came in and started chasing the 8 pointer. The 8 pointer kept making this coughing noise. Weirdest thing I have ever heard. I could have killed the 8 pointer but the 10 never would stop moving. I was grunting with my mouth, the 8 pointer was coughing, and the 10 pointer was running around ready to kick some donkey. It was a God darn deer festival of majestic proportions in that creek bottom for a good minute and a half. Then I get pissed off.

The 8 pointer probably just has one of your old broadheads lodged in its lung. Image

Keith- It sounded like a dry spit. The kind of spit you spit when you spit a finger nail or puddie hair or something of that sort. If that is a sneeze then so be it.

ImageThat ain't funny.

Triton: I was trying to shoot the 10 pointer. I was at full draw and I could not stop him. He was only 8 to 10 yards away. He just kept jumping over logs and chasing that other buck. He was wide open too. What made me mad was that only 10 minutes earlier I had rattled in a monster that spotted me trying to draw. Then this happened and I was pissed. I should have shot him moving. Chances are I would have hit him better than the sammich 9 pointer that I killed the next day. The way I see it, this deer was guestemated to be 135" as a 10 pointer. Now, given the 10" of ground shrinkage that would have occured, he still would have been a mid-120s deer. I'll take that any day.

Come on now. I gladly tell of my screw-ups on this site. In the last 2 years I have had 3 good ones. One really good one. I haven't even hunted this year so there is no telling what is coming down.

Well, I am not real picky, so I was going to take a doe behind the house unless a buck gave me an opportunity. About 515 yesterday afternoon out of some brush came a pretty good doe about 20 yards and was going to step out into a clearing. She stops, and I am thinking to my self just let her go a little farther, so I draw and at that time I have the brain farts of all brain farts, deciding to just go ahead and shoot her through some of the little brushy limbs that are between me and her. So I let an arrow fly, she runs off at a tremendous rate of speed. While I am watching her run off, I catch out of the corner of my eye, a deer running away as well. It was a pretty good sized buck as I did see horns but wasnt able to see just how good. It was a good bodied deer, however....So I am now sitting there with nothing to show for it cuz I went to pick up my arrow and it was clean as a whistle...and no buck....I guess I folded like a card table. There now go ahead and take your best shot, cause I didnt.

PS, once when I was new to hunting I was on private land that boardered a CA, and kept hearing this coughing sound. It started to piss me off, because I figured it to be a tresspasser. Well after 20-30minutes of hearing this behind my stand, I decide to climb down and go tell the guy what's on my mind. Only thing was, I found out after I got down, there was nobody around me for hundreds of yards. Image I had never heard a deer maky any noise like it since then, but one of the guys I described it to said it had to be a buck, just sounded like a human cough.
