Restrictions and Limits on Taney

Post by fishin » January 30th, 2007, 3:09 pm

OK, not that there are a ton of trout fishermen here but from the deer season conversation came; "what do you think about the fishing restrictions and the reduced daily limit on lake Taneycomo?"

Let's hear what everyone thinks?

Damnit Fishin, you've already got me pissed off once this morning regarding the deer situation and how things are not going to change anytime soon. I keep wishin' in one hand and shittin' in the other. Only conclusion I can come up with is my hand is stinking awfully bad. I'd like for you to make an attempt to make up some half-assed untruths to get me back on track.

The way it sounds it is BS. I mean, the MDC surely has the money to put as many trout as they wish in Taney and every other springfed river in southern MO. It isn't like there are going to be monster trout produced as a result of stocking less and lowering the daily limit. I have seen some big rainbows on the 11-Point though.

This whole idea originated somewhere about 10 years or so. I personally cant attest one way or the other, but it does kind of sound like the trophy deer argument. If I am not mistaken that was when the German Brown Trout was stocked although I am not sure about that since I dont go there any, but kind from hearsay.

MDC said when they were going to release less trout, that the trout that were released would be bigger becuase of the less intense pressure to produce so many.

Dave, I was with you until the "less intense" line..kind of an oxymoron?

With the reduced pressure to produce so many fish.

How's that?

The only thing is I cant buy that by looking at the water during the spring and summer months there seems to be about the same number of fishermen out there on the lake and on the bank. That being said, if the MDC puts out less fish wouldnt the fishermen catch less fish. The MDC makes a fortune by selling out of staters trout stamps as well as Mo residents. The MDC has the means and the capital. Now if you want to get me really riled up..."Why doesnt the MDC breed and hatch and help stock some of the area lakes with largemouth like for instance Texas?

fishin, I have been fishing Taney since 1973 when some of you forkers weren't even born. The trout were bigger in the 70's and 80's and size started going down in the 90's in general. Alot of reasons for this but it didn't have much to do with the limits. It is a put and take fishery. They trophy area has worked out pretty good especially in the fall. The 4 fish limit is bull chit if you use their reasoning of stocking bigger fish....fewer maybe but not bigger. I will still fish Taney and I will always keep my 4 fish....skroo any C&R in a put and take lake. My .02 on this one.

Why would you want to eat those nasty forkers?

Every other fish in MO besides gar would taste better.

Rainbow - Put and take...supply and demand. The hatcheries are the same size as they were in the 70's and there are a lot more fisherman now than there was then. Basically they can't keep up. So would you want 4 12" trout or 5 10" trout.

They are renovating hatcheries for increased production. As a matter of fact "S" is giving a presentation tomorrow at the MNRC(look it up morons) at Tan-tara on new 'puter software to increase hatchery production.

Triton is dead on Taney has pretty much become a place for a vactioning peron to pay $8 and catch 4, not much more than that. I also agree that we should be breeding and stocking other game fish but I don't think it makes economic sense like it does to breed trout for Taney.

Rainbow we already know you are an old forker by my standards I have only been fishing there since the 80's. We go and keep our 4 per and have a good time fishing the trophy area and I enjoy the rainbows. I really don't think that the trophy area has done anything to help fish size, it is a farce.

Fish, I would love to hear more about the project that "S" is working on currently. I know that they are doing a lot of renovation on the area hatcheries to up production but I don't think that the will be going back to a 5 fish limit.

fish, I am basically talking about Taney. If I am not mistaken didn't the Shepherd facility get expanded some years back. I seem to remember most of their raceways were earthen back in the 70's. Regardless, there is a general perception that the reason was to stock larger fish and that has not happened. I have not noticed a big change on Taney and I am there 4 or 5 times a year. Plus I read somewhere that attendance in the parks was off about 18% in recent years. If that is true then the demand would certainly be lower or was it caused by the reduced limit. Arguments can be made on both sides. I hope the presentation that S is making is a huge success and I would fully support that.
