Fishing Truman

LA, I think they opened the dam in 1979 not in the 60's. At any rate you weren't born at either time. You are right about the cove mouths.

BB, the lake is plenty deep to run in but don't do anything you can't get out of. There is a lot of standing timber in the coves and along banks but it is also great cover for suspended fish. If they are in the coves look for the pea gravel banks and fish with a jig.

LA. I am mainly looking for ideas on where to fish. I've never been to the lake and do not know if there are any areas that are generally considered good places to start. I was also wanting to know if there was anything that I needed to watch out for as far as running up and down the lake, but it sounds like people have answered that.

Rainbow.... I have fished with my father and uncles all my life. They fished The Grand River and know exactly where road ditches are and where old culverts are and such. I was born in 1978 FYI.

Which marina is your tournament out of, or is it an informal tournament where you can pick your launching point?



We'll give you some ideas if you can figure out which part of that 55,000+ acre lake you are going to be at.

Are there no wake zones on Truman that are designated fishing areas. I was looking at my mapsource last night and it shows several areas that have diagonal lines through it and it saying fishing area.

Not that I am aware of. You can fish anywhere except swimming beaches and the docks around marinas.

I figured you could fish anywhere, but on some lakes like Kinkaid in Illinois or Thomas Hill they have large areas that are designated no wake for fishing only or no boats are allowed for waterfowl refuge. Just wondering if there was anything similar at Truman.

There really isn't any of those "no boating" types of areas on Truman, other than the "no sailboat" areas on the upper ends of the Deepwater and Grand arms because of the power lines. There are a lot of "no boating" waters that are unmarked (you'll know when you get high centered on the mud flats!)



Osage Bluff is one of my favorite depature points- I do a lot of fishing out of there. Be very careful when you leave the Osage Bluff cove out towards KK island; the north (right) side of the island and the east (closer) side of the island are VERY shallow and your lower unit could get bogged down in muck or even torn off (doesn't bother my jet drive unit).



RB is right that the Tebo arm will be the warmest, but is also one of the most turbid after lots of rain (like right now). It is also a long run run from Osage Bluff unless you have Triton's triton. Other options for shorter runs to hit bassy waters would be up the Osage Arm towards Hodges Creek and Berry Bend to hit coves (this will be dingier water as well) or south on the Pomme arm towards Fairfield access and Hwy 83 bridge (generally clearer water).



If you make the long run to Tebo Arm, you can also go up the lower part of the Grand Arm near Long Shoals and hit some of those coves. Both are likely to be muddy; in fact almost all parts of the lake will be except maybe the Pomme arm. If you do go to the Tebo Arm, realize that it has a fairly narrow deep channel and has a LOT of shallow mud flats on the upper end near Windsor Crossing.

Thanks for everyone's help we are heading up there on Friday after work and fishing Saturday. I'll let you know how things go.

I had 3 keepers that weighed a little over 8 lbs on my tournament on Sunday, but had about 18lbs on Friday. We didnt go out on Sunday, something to do with the snow coming down in snowballs.

BB55, I would have a jig tied on, but some of the others that did real well were throwing a jerkbait. the lake had risen 2 feet in a little more than a day, so I think the fish may have moved back out and suspended a little from when I went out on Friday and I didnt make the change.

It isnt a real long run from Osage Bluff to the dam, depending on how fast you can go. I started out down there yesterday and I think it may have taken me about 8-10 minutes at the longest. If you get down there look in a cove where the Thibault launch ramp is in the mouth of the Little Tebo and the next cove north (crayfish cove) I think. On Friday it had a lot of fish in it. Not as much on Sunday.
