Food Plots

Last July we nuked all the food plots at the Tick Farm and decided to start over. He bought a couple different varieties of Pennington seed mixtures. As of last Sunday this is what they looked like.

3/4 Acre plot by the cabin. Half is white clover and the other half if a mixture with red clover, turnip, rape, rye, chickory, and some other stuff.






We had a tiny spot right by the creek that was about 2000 sq. ft. There was a little multiflora rose and birch saplings to clear out and it made a decent plot.




Also had a little strip on the back fenceline of the property that was just overgrown with weeds & crap. Cleared it off and put in a patch of clover. It's about 15 ft. wide and 100 ft. long.

I was thinking about planting some lespedeza clover this weekend, but its a good thing I didn't.



Those plots were planted in July, or were cleard in July?

Cleared and tilled in late July/early August, planted around the 1st or 2nd week of August.

That clover looks good. How did they look last fall?

Those look like killin fields to me.

That clover on the back fence was planted early last year and was very green and about 8 inches tall last Fall. It didn't get eaten much, probably due to all the acorns last year. The clover in the other fields was about 4 inches tall and didn't get eaten all winter, either. With the warm wet March it sprung up quick this year. As you can see, the April freeze didn't affect it at all. It'll be interesting to see how it looks this Fall & Winter if there aren't many acorns because of the freeze.

Since there wont be any acorn crop this fall and winter, I would bet they would eat it down to the nubs this year.

I whacked a doe from that stand right in front of her fawn on Sept. 19, '04. She was standing about at the left edge of that pic at the edge of the food plot.

A chitload of Roundup.

Thanks Rafe. I need to put in a new one because my old plot has overgrown with that dang fescue.

Bet that was rather costly, right? Roundup doesnt come cheap.
