Chalk up another one...

...for huntingATM, and the Deana stand. Opening morning of the IL firearm season found Mason, and I sitting in our stands on opposite sides of his favorite tree. Movement was slow, compared to earlier sits in this stand, but at 6:45 a decent 8-point made his way down the edge of the woods, and the tree farm, 60 yards away. A couple of grunts from my trusty, old, antique, grunt call, and he was angling in behind Mason, and in front of me. I got the command to stop him, and one more grunt froze him in mid-step. The 20-guage roared, and the buck gave the familiar mule-kick, and took off as hard as he could. He couldn`t make it far, since the slug had blown out the top of his heart. He disappeared into the small, dried-up creek, that we walked in on, but when he didn`t come up the other side we knew he was done. I turned around to see a big, metal-toothed smile, and lips that were quivering from the shakes. The temperature was quite comfortable, but the kid was shaking like my wife`s dachsund does when I give her "the stare". The kid is turning into quite an outdoorsman. Turkey, doves, squirrels, ducks, geese, and deer have fallen victim, this year, to his ever steadying aim. And we just keep adding to our growing book of memories.

I was all over the dang place when I got my first wheels, and had a fishing rod, a 20g, and a .22 with in the truck everywhere I went. They'd arrest a kid for that now.
