Kid's first deer

Post by JimDog » November 6th, 2009, 9:16 am

Took the youngster out last weekend. He wacked this doe at 130 yards. It crumpled in it's tracks. He was pumped! He really wanted a buck, but the two bucks we saw that morning were both running, and well over 200 yards out. Since we had to be home that evening, I suggested he take the doe. Neither of us will forget it...

Great job. Were you guys in that stand in the background?

Yes. It was the same stand we hunted out of last year, and this doe was standing within 10 yards of a nice buck that he missed last year. We spent a lot of time at the range this year, and he was driving nails with that little .243 that he shoots.

There was a doe straight out in front of us at about 75 yards just milling around for close to an hour that morning. When I suggested that he take that one, he said no - there may be a buck trailing her. This one appeared right by where he missed that buck. He waited 15 minutes or so, just to make sure there wasn't a buck trailing her. After the 15 minutes, he declared that he was going to shoot it. I had the binocs on it when he pulled the trigger, and it's legs folded and it went down and didn't as much as kick.

By the way - on the way in to work yesterday, I saw two buck on the move. One was a little 6 point - the other was a dandy mainframe 8 - both were cruising along at a good clip. I plan to spend all daylight hours in a stand this weekend. The wind and the heat sucks, but no doubt the deer will be on the move...
