commercial or reload

I prefer ballistic tips with the .243.
If your reloading there is a lot of things you can do with the bullet. If your buying factory go with the ballistic tip.

Ballistic tip bullets serve a single purpose very well. That is to detonate inside the chest cavity of a whitetail and turn vitals into red goo. Virtually all rifles of high velocity are equal when loaded with Ballistic Tip Bullets. Marginal shots are not recommended or wise. My findings are a 300 WSM is a 270 is a 243 in the case of Ballistic tip bullets. Deaths are similar and wound channels are close to the same. Pass thrus are almost nonexistant.

On the other hand, if you are a marginal shot( which by the way most all of us are, that includes you who just read this and scoffed at the idea and had a twinkle in the back of your head about just how keen you are behind the trigger)that means you need a bullet made to hold together a little better and compensate for shooting mistakes. In this case one bullet has stood above the rest for some time -- the nosler partition. I would say the 95 grain IMO. Now partitons are not the only tough bullet on the market these days. There are several others makeing good press and would be worth looking into.

And if anyone tells you that your .243 is some how lacking the proper authority to down a whitetail, you can tell them to piss off. The majority of respected and practical modern day gun writers and experts give proper credit to the .243 for it's unique ability to fit a niche of viable whitetail medicine and varmint capabilities. The only other gun to cover such a broad horizon is the .25-06

Thanks for the info. I'm working up a recipe for my wife and the partitions will be the first bullet I try so if she pokes one in the sholder it'll go on through.
Thanks again for the comments.

nothing wrong with the partitions either, but field dressing is a hell of a lot easier with the ballistic tips. i like them because every bit of energy hits and stays in the deer. pass thrus are rare which in my mind is a good thing on deer. i would not use them on anything bigger than a deer but i have never had a deer take more than a couple of steps after hitting it with a ballistic tip.

You hit even a twig with those ballistic tips, and you will be wishing you had never heard of them. The PS

Both bullets have thier downfalls. I have used ballistic tips for the past three years with devestating results, but I think I'm going to switch this year so that I can poke single holes. I like to track them atleast 100 yards since rifle hunting is akin to watching paint dry for excitement.

I took my best buck ever, with Federal Premium ammo topped with the Sierra Gameking .243 85gr. BTHP.

I'm not saying it's the "best", but I'm not complaining...

The scope mount on my 6-250 came loose during a hunt, and my guide loaned me his back-up ~ a NEF Handi-Rifle in .243. I'd never hunted deer with a .243 before, so I was a bit skeptical. The buck left a blood-trail like I'd never seen before. I now own a NEF Handi-Rifle in .243 ~ and I'm sold on the Sierra Gameking BTHP...
That's my story, and I'm sticking to it...
