Just something to start something going maybe
What do ya'll think about using a .223 rem for deer hunting? I was just wondering what you guys all thought about this. And no I"m not going to use one for hunting it's just for starting a convo.

Ammo for shooting does an fawns. W.A.S. can help you out on this.

Depends on your ability/confidence level. I wouldn't be at all hesitant to hunt with my Bushmaster, but normally use my Ruger because it's stainless and I don't worry if it gets rained/snowed on. I treat my Bushy as a "fair weather" gun.

Could this round go through the bone and mussle of the shoulder and make a good clean kill? And if so what grain of bullet?

Fish, is right for once, it is good ammo for shootin fawns and does. As far as penetration with a shoulder shot, penetration or power isn't the issue with these rounds. The problem is if you hit heavy bone the lighter round will divert it's path, therefore I highly suggest taking head shots. That way you don't ruin as much meat!!

Oh, thank God someone finally started the yearly post about .223's being used for deer. It doesn't really surprise me that D.R. started it, either.
I could friggin' gag. I will not read this post again. I can't stomach another discussion on this.

Well Rafe why did you even take time to read the posts and even type a response on it then? You're such a moron.
As far as using the .223, I wouldn't just because of the penetration and knock down of the round. Just my opinion though.

Re: Just something to start something going maybe
Why would anyone want to use a .223 on deer when so many vastly superior rounds are available. The .223 was developed to disable enemy troops, and became a great varmint (prairie dog, woodchuck, etc.) cartridge, but without some serious tinkering with the load, it simply does not pack enough energy to make a quick, humane kill except in rare instances. A lot of "knowledgeable dads" get their kid a .223 as a starter gun. In most instances it only leads to wounded deer that are not recoved, and die a lingering death to infection or predators. You know anybody who duck hunts with a .410? The .223 is a fine cartridge and does many things well. Big game hunting is not one of them.

Why would you make a wastefull shot like that? You destroy meat, possibly on both sides, and put bone splinters in part of what you do get to keep. Shoot just behind the shoulder, through the rib-cage to avoid the waste. I mostly take neck shots, preferring not to waste much meat, and a .223 will definately penetrate a neck/spine.

Re: Just something to start something going maybe
Kool so many different ideas and thoughts....
I"m kinda on the side that thinks it's a good varmint round, but to everyone there own ways.
I've done one neck shot with a rifel and that was with a .44 mag carbine at about 40 yards. Broke the neck no problem and the deer died right there in about 2 seconds. But most of all the deer I have taken where with a shot right behind the shoulder through the lungs and taking out the back side of the heart is posable.
Ok change the cal. to a .243, What do you guys think about that for deer?

That new .17 hornet is gonna be the round for Missouri Whitetails. It is super fast and will penetrate more based upon speed than the .223 round.
