Launched out of Lightfoot Park today with intentions of trolling for walleyes. My first attempt at longlining crankbaits was so-so....I lost one in the trees, but found a new custom painted one a few yards down the bluff, so that evened out. After losing the one lure, I put the line counter rigs away and got out the trusty baitcaster and a Gulp worm. The bite was slow (as several other boats had told me), but I came out OK. Caught one very nice keeper bass about 19", plus half a dozen more that were just short of the 15" lake minimum. For some unknown reason, some of the fish got really confused and thought I was our old friend Wolfie....I got on a shallow flat bank and caught three very nice channel cats on the Gulp worm, and caught a smaller flathead on another bluff bank. Go figure. That certainly bears out the Gulp claim of having 400% more scent. The channels were all over that worm almost as soon as it hit the water.....and there wasn't much water for it to slither around in...maybe a foot and a half. The cats were up against sycamore tree roots of trees just barely out in the water. Anyway, it was a great day on the water, the lake is clean and the water is pretty. Not a lot of boat traffic, either. CW will definitely be back to that part of the lake.
