Caught my first walleye!

Post by hunting170 » July 11th, 2005, 1:05 pm

Spent last week vacationing on Lake Kabetogama in northern MN. Fishing had been awesome until the day before we arrived there. Apparently a huge mayfly hatch started a couple of days prior to our arrival, and the fish got their bellies full on them. Locals said it was an unusual hatch as it lasted for about five days. However, thanks to some of the nicest people that I have ever met, we still got into some nice walleyes, and smallmouths. My first eye was a 20 1/2 incher hooked in some pretty swift current. That fish, and the new friend I made that took me to one of his favorite, secluded spots, made the whole trip worthwhile. We did catch a few more fish before we had to head south, but that one fish will be etched in my memory forever. Now I just gotta find me some walleyes around here. I`m hooked.
One day, long, long ago, there lived a woman who did not whine, nag, or bitch.
But it was a long time ago, and it was just that one day.

I've caught two this year, my first two ever. They were only 10-12" but interesting.

Yesterday while I was crappie fishing, I hooked a really decent fish though. Easily over 20", and he snapped my 4lb line just as I got him up close enough to get a glimps of him. My goal now is to get one or two big enough to at least get a taste of walleye.

Crappie and flathead have been my target fish for a few years now, but I hear walleye are some of the best eating. I have to try it.

Dave...The walleyes are right up there with those beautiful flatheads... I know, it seems impossible but it's true.

Caught several nice flatheads and channels yesterday at the Stockton walleye tourney. We found a new brushpile on the edge of a long hump. Stuck one fish there that I couldn't turn. After moseying around this way and that for a bit without coming up one foot, he straightened my hook and was gone.......He hit a jumbo leech. At first I was thinking wow, I've just hooked the new lake record walleye......

HI70.....now you know what all the fuss us about down here in the walleye forum. You probably have more walleye fishing water available over on your side of the Big River, so it shouldn't be too hard to get connected with somebody local who can get you started on the right track where you live. Maybe some of the guys who post here regularly are familiar with the Mt. Vernon area and potential places to fish. Good luck in your search.

H170

Now you have gone and done it. Just catching one of those addictive things will consume the rest of your life. Well, at least the rest of your money.

Seems once you catch a couple you can't get enough. Image

Good Luck explaining the extra expenses to your signifiant other. Image
