Deer licking branches

Post by 2BHNTN » August 29th, 2005, 11:53 am

Anybody watch that Deer and Deer Hunting program over the weekend ? This guy was stringing a wire up about 9 feet or so and tie wrapping a fresh oak branch to it so it would hang about 4 feet off the ground. Creating a mock licking branch, then he tore the ground up underneath it as a scrape. He has been photographing bucks using these setups for years and now uses it for bowhuting. Anybody ever try this ? I think I might. I have made lots of mock scrapes over the years but not to this extent. Sounds cool.

This is a serious Deer hunting stratagies post. Please take your grocery killing mentality back over to the duck forum. I prefer sooner rather than later. There will be no fun had in the deer forum and that's that. Image Image Image Image Image Image

That is reel funny. ahu, ahu, ahu.

I think it would be a good tactic if you have a trail you know bucks are using and have no good trees for a mock scrap close to a stand location. Gonna try it.

I might concider it if there was a tree that was a traditional licking branch that had been damaged or taken out. Otherwise I just find where the deer are scraping naturally and hunt there.

I have a couple spots for that as well Dave. The reason I am looking to try this is I have a spot with 3 or 4 different trails that come within 30 yards. A triple intersecting trail is the spot I want to hang this over. No trees that would fit the bill for a mock scrape.

I think I have a magazine at home with a similar strategy in it. Come to think of it, that may be the Sept. edition of D & DH. Seems that it may have been Charles Alsheimer that wrote it. When Alsheimer talks, we should all listen. He is to whitetails what Chuck Adams is to bowhunting.

That's the stupidest thing I have read yet from you 2B. Well, not the stupidest, but close. No deer are going to use such a thing.

If you have a small piece of land or are hunting in the really thick stuff this might be the thing to make a "missouri big buck" take a detour.
