I keep catching the wrong fish

Post by Warmouth » April 10th, 2006, 10:16 am

I've caught more bass over 18" this spring than I have in any one year that I remember. Last night I caught a 21.5" fat belly sow. She was a pig. Makes for interesting work when you're fishing ultralight gear and 4lb line.

The trouble is I'm striking out on my good crappie spots. Dang bass.

Is this private pond without length restrictions? If so, you might want to eat ya some bass....big bass eat little crappie.

Last night we went out and got skunked. Fuggin Skunked! Does that make you feel better DMR? It makes me feel like azs. I've been pounding crappie at this lake for 4yrs, any time of the year, but this yr is the pits. I'm thinking about giving up on this lake and hitting another to start over. I couldn't be doing any worse I tell ya.

I fished for almost 3 hrs. last Sun. 2 specs, and one dinkus bass.

But, I didn't get skunked, so yeah, I guess I do feel better. Image Image

Taking the boy out to the farm tonight for some pond fishing. Don't think we stocked in crappie in the pond we'll probably fish tonight, but there's some nice catfish in there. Hoping to bring home some for cooking...but knowing the boy, he'll be bringing home frogs and lots of mud. Image

He don't give a chit and neither do I...as long as he's having fun, that's what's important! ...and it usually is at my expense....but it's a small price to pay! Image

Good luck ODF. I'm going to a 4 acre farm pond where I hear thay're on the banks, so if the rain holds off, LA and I may get into some.

Good luck dave!! I hate to admit this on the open board, but I've got access to some wash-outs that were created during the big floods. Anything that lives in the river is in these holes, and then some. Owner said all sorts of fish are walking around the banks...so I'm gonna break out the bowfishing setup this weekend and see what I can stick.

Carp are up and rolling near the banks in the lake I'm fishing.

I like those washout holes and deep creek holes. You never know what the heck is in there to catch. Hook a big'en.

One of these is like a giant sink hole that's filled up. It's about 150 yards or more (haven't actually walked it off) from the river, but the level rises and drops with river level some. I've been told the hole is at least 40 feet deep. Supposedly it holds some big cats of all varieties, that came from the river during the floods. I've seen some big-azzed shadows swimming in there!

That's a blew hole, ya goof ! And yeah, anything that lives in the river could be livin' in there.

Iffin' yer lucky, river access was terminated before the Asian carp invasion. If not, just go out there and smack the surface with an oar / paddle. Your boy could have a blast stompin' all the nasty bastages that jump on to the bank. Image

I thought blew (blue) holes were basically scour holes, where the river current dug a pit during the floods. One of these holes fluctuates with the river levels. The other 3 or 4 on the property don't change with river levels. They are more like what I thought scour/blew holes were.

No asians (carp or otherwise) have come out of any of those holes yet. Image
