Weather trivia for fishing

Post by Kutter » May 2nd, 2004, 9:57 pm

Weather trivia I just posted in answer to a question on another board. Thought I'd start a new thread for us. List any weather effects on fishing or trivia that could help us out when on the water.

#1 - When on a boat with posible storms in the area. Watching out for lightning is obvious, but a cool trick to find out when lightning is aproaching is to turn an AM radio on. Dial it in to a place on the dial that has no stations. Turn the volume up. You will pick up the static from lightning while it is still many miles away, giving you ample time to get off the water.

#2 - When you are out on the water and it begins to rain, we all wonder if it's a short quick rain or if it will last all day and we might as well give it up for the day. One way to tell that works every time. Have you ever seen rain hitting the water and the drops causes a bubble to form? Well with a little experience watching how many bubbles form compared to normal, can help. The more bubbles forming, the shorter the rain will last. No bubbles or fewer than normal, go home unless you don't mind fishing in the rain all day. This has to do with the barrometric preasure and how bubbles form. It's a neat trick and after learning WHAT is normal, it works every time.

Thanks for the tips, Kutter. The only problem I would have with #1 is that, with my luck, lightning that was 10 miles away would seek out my radio antenna and fry the radio, the boat, and the occupants. As far as #2 goes, I have noticed a difference in the way water bubbles under raindrops, but never gave it any thought. When we got rained on Sunday at Stockton, there weren't any bubbles forming and the rain lasted about half an hour. When the second rainstorm blew in, we were more concerned about #1. We didn't need the radio because we could hear the thunder booming and getting progressively closer.
We're on a mission from God.
