PoisonSnake Tip of the Week (Week 3)

Post by PoisonSnake » February 21st, 2012, 3:48 pm

In the event that you shoot a nice deer, don't just sit back for 30 minutes, unload your gun, and enjoy the rest of the evening. Get your white ass down there to the animal ASAP before he/she jumps up and attempts to run out of your life forever.

WM, it's been said that the Snake has mounted some of his victims on the ground and they died from the experience.

Honestly, what do you do after you make a shot. Bow or gun. I guess over the years I've learned what to do based on where I saw the arrow go, and how the animal reacts. If I put the arrow where I want, I never wait more than a couple minutes.

Obviously, if you see or hear them crash that's one thing, but even if I don't, I guess I know at this point what to do. I rarely have deer go very far, and I never did see the point in waiting.

If I question the shot, I'll wait as long as I see fit. Otherwise, I pretty much collect my chit and go get it.

I'm with all of you on this. I don't wait at all unless I'm unsure of the shot/hit.

I have waited for a few hours before recovery in a couple of instances, but I can only think of one time that it made any difference at all.

Hell, I gutshot one several years ago. Just a total fk up on my part. It was a 30-something yard shot at a moving doe. I should have stopped her, but I led her (poorly) instead. I knew it was a gut hit, and I watched her walk off and I still didn't wait 5 minutes.

Tracked her and shot her in her bed from about 8 yards 15 minutes later.

Other times, I can see waiting. That 30 minute thing is about ridiculous, though. If I run a 4-blade through your lungs, you aren't going to live 3 minutes, let alone 30.

I was thinking about that 30minute rule last week. I honestly think that came about 100+yrs ago when folks were using black powder cartridges that were weak and maybe didn't give a passthrough all of the time, and trad bows with horrible arrow flight.

The waiting over night thing really pisses me off with the tv hunters. They're all scared of the dark.

On second thought, maybe that 30 minute rule for bowhunting comes about because most people flat-out suck with a bow.

The 30 minute rule is so you can drink a 6 pack before you go get it.

This particular buck was rifle shot and layed motionless in front of me for 20 or so minutes after the shot only to get up and run after I stood up and opted to walk off. This now has happened twice to me with rifle in hand. Note to self: "Drop the rifle".

Had the same thing happen to me. dropped a small buck in his tracks and he layed there without moving for at least 15 min. Then the bugger got up and walked off. Found him dead the next morning on the neighbors place. He was damn near frozen solid.

I just use a bowfishing rig, and reel em up after I shoot em.
