Ready for Youth Season!
Took the youngin out to the range again this weekend. He is dialed in and ready. Now just need the weather to hold and the weekend to get here!

G-Man has a band performance in Nevada on Saturday morning, which is conveniently close to the Tick Farm. We'll be in the timber by 10:00. Hope to have one down Saturday because the weather looks pretty crappy for Sunday.

My buddy and his eleven year old son saw plenty of birds at our place on Saturday but could not get anything close enough for a shot. They had a good time and things are looking good for the regular season. How did you all do?

On Saturday we had a gobbler strutting 10 yards in front of us, and Ash got busted trying to get his gun on it. On Sunday we had a gobbler strutting at 15 yards. Asher got a shot off at this one, but missed. Both of those birds were worked off the roost. The rest of the days we spent chasing birds, but just couldn't get in on them. Sunday we had a little bit of a late start... took a nap in the truck waiting for a thunderstorm, and lightning, to pass... luckily the birds got a late start as well!

Sounds like it was a good hunt. My buddy did call two in at about 40 yds but his son could not see them from where he was sitting. They hunted better part of all day Saturday and took a pass with the weather on Sunday.

G-Man & I had 2 awesome days.
Saturday he had a band performance in Nevada, which is only 20 minutes from the Tick Farm and the performace was over at 9:00. We got our groceries and headed to the cabin. Got things put together and ate an early lunch, then headed out. He sat in a nest of seed ticks pretty early in the afternoon, so we went back to the cabin to change and shower. On the way there, we saw a tom out in the neighbor's field. Worked him for a while and he didn't cooperate. After the shower, we went to where I know they roost sometimes. Sat down by a little creek at about 3:30 and I called a couple times. Got a few talking, but one was fairly close. Soon I saw him move at the top of the hill about 130 yards away. Called him down to us and he came in strutting and gobbling. He came to 25 yards and busted G when he tried to get around for the shot. He didn't go far, and put on a show for us for the next 3 hours. During all this, I called in another gobbler from behind us, who came in quiet until he gobbled 20 yards and scared the pee-wadding out of us. The coolest part was when the first gobbler was walking away from us, he went up close to where I had first seen him and met another gobbler. They sparred for a couple minutes. You should have seen Garner's face when he was watching that.
Sunday morning we got 2 jakes close, but not close enough. They ended up following a hen away from us. We went back to the cabin during the rain and went back out after lunch. The sun came out and birds were moving all over the place. It was crazy. We spooked a big gobbler in a field, but we got back on him. I was able to call him in and got him to 20 yards, but again Garner couldn't get the shot.
Storm came in and we got hailed on as we were loading up to go back home.
G-Man got to see some cool things. Sparring gobblers, dusting hen, strutting jakes, hen chasing off 2 other hens, hen doing a flydown cackle, birds going up to roost...

Same kind of thing here with our youth hunter. Plenty of birds but no shot. Sounds like you two had a good weekend and that is what counts the most. It is tough for the youths to bag a bird in a two day season but at least they can hunt the regular season and have more time. Good to see you pass on the skills to G so he can pass them on. Hats off to all those who took a kid hunting.
