Used to know this ol boy that took old chainsaw blades and cut knives out of the middle of them. Is the steel somptin you heated and shaped ?

No I didn't make this knife, An old guy from upstate made this knife. It is unbranded because it is one of his early knives before he started branding them. Now he has a circle with an H in the center of it.

BB....I've never seen one made from chainsaw steel, but my grandfather had an old fashioned coal fired forge and would make knives for family members from old files. His son in law carried a Marine style fighting knife all through WWII in the Pacific, and kept using it for skinning deer until he died about twelve years ago. A favorite source of steel for hand made knives was worn out blades from the large circular saws in small saw mills. I have a custom made Damascus steel drop point knife made by a fellow down in Arkadelphia, Ark named Roy Slaughter. It appears to be made from a piece of old sawmill steel. The blade has at least four different hardness levels, which is not an easy thing to accomplish. That's why true custom knives are expensive. The cheap assembly line knives are made from a piece of steel stamped out from a blank, then an edgde is ground on and polished, a handle added, and in the box it goes. Takes maybe ten minutes to make one. Depending on the techniques used by a particular knife maker, it can take from several hours to several days to make a given knife. There is a very talented knife maker over on the Whitetail board. His knives are literally works of art, much like a fine shotgun or engraved rifle.

No problem, John...you weren't trying to sell the knife, only show that it is one big, sharp mutha. Kinda missed you around here....I keep up with "that other place" somewhat, but it's getting longer and longer between anonymous visits.
Got too many irons in the fire here. Hey, tell ol' Woodgoat that I have started to cast rifle bullets, but they don't come close to the beauties he turns out. Maybe I will get better after a few thousand rejects. I'm learning on low velocity gas check 160 grainers for a .308.

Good to here from you, I am in thr process of trading off my Garand for a pair of H & R Ultra Varmits in 223. I have the better half shooting now and the way she shoots I want her to have a good gun that don't kick the hell out of her. Oh by the way I am going to be a father again dec 31, and marriage is in my future again.

Congratulations, you old dog! A matched pair of H&R Ultra varmints is a great acquisition.....and on the other thing, too. Let's see, you will be about 106 when your new kid gets out of high school, right? I recently acquired an Ultra Hunter in .308, and initial trials indicate that it could easily become my primary deer rifle this season. I've had a Handi Rifle with the heavy barrel in .223 for several years, and it comes off the rack when I hit the local hayfields for coyote calling. Out past 200 yards, it is a little anemic, especially on a poorly placed shot, but in its comfort zone you can't beat it. When I retired from the Air Force, I "acquired" several ammo cans of 5.56 range brass and proceeded to reload a considerable amount. There's still well over a thousand rounds in blue plastic 50 rd boxes stacked on my ammo shelf in the basement. That represents probably two lifetimes of coyote hunting....
When the new baby comes due, have Momma hold off until after midnight, name the new baby "Ruger" and tell the company that they should give the first baby of the new year a #1 chambered in .243...which, of course, you would have to hold until an appropriate time, say 15 years later.

Well the H&R's fell thru, I should have known better to take it to a guy that refers to anything as a boat anchor, I told him it shoots 1" groups a 100 yds and he can't even see that far. I had the sproterized stock on it and he didn't like that. So I will try another gun shop.

Well the garand is gone, and I got 2 .223 NEF bull barreled rifles, 1 brand new and the other looks it both with scopes and both shoot 3/4" groups a 100yds. Man am I happy
